Adele to release 19
British singer-songwriter Adele has yet to decide whether music is "it" for her. But events during the past year might have settled the matter. Adele received the first Critics Choice prize at the Brit Awards even before she had released her debut album, 19, in 2008. The record topped the charts there and also made it to No. 11 on the Billboard 200.
A single from the album, Chasing Pavements, (XL Recordings) won a Grammy for female pop vocal performance, and Adele also won a Grammy as best new artist. She was also named best jazz act at the 2008 Urban Music Awards.
Adele is still getting to know herself and her voice, and she's well aware of her musical naiveté. She says she wrote the first album "in about three weeks, and that the one she's working on now isn't moving so quickly. "And I'm trying to work out what I want to sound like, you know? The first album doesn't have a particular sound because it's my first album, and I don't want to have a definite sound at the age of 19. I want to grow as an artist and not rewrite the first record a million times. So it's taking a lot of work. It's challenging, which I think is good."

Similarly, Adele is sanguine about recording her next album, even though she doesn't know when that will happen. "I have a lot of ideas and about six songs. But I struggle writing when I'm on the road. An idea pops into my head and I record it on my phone," she says.
She has some collaborators lined up for recording later in the year, but understands that the best-laid plans, when it comes to art, don't always come to fruition.
"I know who I'm working with and duets and stuff and I'm not trying to be secretive. But I don't want to say in case it doesn't work out."
The single, "Hometown Glory" impacts Hot AC on April 20th.

Monday January 28th sees the release of “19”, the debut album by ADELE. Born in Tottenham and raised in Brixton, 19 year old Londoner ADELE has been songwriting and playing guitar since she was 14. Citing her influences as diverse as Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, The Cure and Peggy Lee, ADELE also recently completed her first solo UK tour, having toured previously with the likes of Jack Penate, Jamie T, Raul Midon, Amos Lee and Devendra Banhart.
She will be playing a selection of dates between now and January, including headlining at Blue Flowers at the George IV in Chiswick, London on December 16th.
“19” contains both her debut track “Hometown Glory” and her forthcoming single “Chasing Pavements”. Blues tinged and melancholic, ADELE describes “Chasing Pavements” as "It's me being hopeful for a relationship that's very much over. The sort of relationship you hate when you're in it, but miss when you're not". A hymn to lost love and regret, “Chasing Pavements” follows ADELE’s first limited edition single “Hometown Glory”, which introduced ADELE to the world to much critical acclaim, with NME calling it “Totally, absolutely beautiful”, Q Magazine calling her “The voice of next year”, The Sunday Times saying “A star is born” and Elle commenting “she has a songbook as broken hearted as Leonard Cohen’s”.
