After the implosion of Grandaddy, all eyes were on lead singer Jason Lytle to carry on the torch of ramshackle hi-tech folk that the band virtually trademarked. But it turns out that the first truly great post-Granddaddy album will come from guitarist Jim Fairchild.
Performing under the name All Smiles, Fairchild recorded his first solo album, Ten Readings Of A Warning, in various locations up the west coast - a kitchen in LA, a living room in Portland – on an 8-track recorder, capturing the shambling charm of his prior band but with a distinctly more personal slant.
The first taste of the album, “Moth In Cloud Of Smoke” is a great introduction, the chorus beings and the heavy metal guitars dive for cover behind the bouncing piano hook. Fairchild’s voice sounds more tender than Lytle’s, with less Neil Young inflection, and is easily capable of carrying the song.
We gave "Moth In A Cloud Of Smoke" music video by All Smiles a listen and yeah, we like it. Let's see if it will 'grow' on us. (May, 2007)
Remember: oldie but goodie. Like wine, some songs get better due time. Is this one of them or was it just a one-day wonder?
