Barry Manilow 'Scores: Songs From Copacabana and Harmony' album

Barry Manilow’ unparalleled career is made up of virtually every facet of music, including performing, composing, arranging and producing.

A 2002 Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, Manilow has triumphed in every medium of entertainment. He has received Grammy, Emmy and Tony Awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Barry Manilow will release “SCORES-Songs From Copacabana and Harmony” on September 28 on Concord Records. The much-anticipated album features Manilow’s personal renditions of the songs he has written for two of his major musical properties, Copacabana and Harmony. In conjunction with the album release, Manilow will begin his Fall tour on the East coast in late September.

Manilow and Bruce Sussman’s Harmony is gearing up for its Broadway debut. Harmony is based on the true story of Germany’s “Comedian Harmonists.” Recognized as the world’s first superstar boy band, The Comedian Harmonists enjoyed international album and movie success, performed concert tours throughout Europe, the United States, and Australia, and recorded and performed with legendary stars Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker, before being forced to disband by the Nazi regime. The book for Harmony was written by Bruce Sussman. Manilow and Sussman co-wrote all of the songs for the musical.

This past spring, Manilow (in association with Concord Records) released Manilow’s two CD set, 2NightsLIVE! and the two DVD set UltimateMANILOW!, both from the superstar named “a giant among entertainers...the showman of our generation” by Rolling Stone Magazine. These major releases followed on the heels of Manilow’s platinum-plus smash album, Ultimate Manilow, and heralded the start of BMG Strategic Marketing Group’s multi-year strategy for Barry Manilow’s music catalog. Both releases have been certified Gold.
2003 found Manilow producing and arranging two albums for two very special ladies of song. On Midnight Manilow collaborated with Eddie Arkin to produce a jazz album of all new material created especially for the First Lady of Jazz, Diane Schuur. The critically acclaimed Concord album featured duets with Brian McKnight, Karrin Allyson and Manilow. He was also reunited with Bette Midler for the first time in 30 years when he conceived Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook. The Grammy nominated Sony release, co-produced by Manilow and Robbie Buchanan, gave Midler her first Gold album in a decade.
Rounding out 2003 Manilow hosted A Barry Manilow Christmas: Live By Request, A&E’s first holiday themed Request. The variety special, featuring Manilow performing holiday hits with full orchestra, would become the highest rated music special of the year for A&E and their highest rated Request in over two years. Also in December, Barry appeared in a cameo role when NBC’s Will & Grace aired an episode titled “Fanilow,” about Manilow and his music, in which Will waited hours in line for concert tickets and a chance to meet the man himself. Manilow and Eric McCormack (Will) recently collaborated on the song, “Living with Grace,” which will be on the Fall 2004 release of Will & Grace: Let The Music Out!

In November 2002, the Number One Adult Contemporary Artist of all time (according to Radio & Records Magazine) released A Christmas Gift of Love, his second holiday album. It quickly went Gold, capping a banner year and proving that Manilow is truly unstoppable.

Ultimate Manilow, a compilation of Manilow’s most popular hits, debuted at Number Three, his highest chart entry, on the Billboard 200 chart in March 2002. It’s currently over double Platinum.

In January 2002, Manilow launched his 9-month, sold-out LIVE2002! tour after ringing in the New Year at Los Angeles’ most prestigious new concert venue, the Kodak Theatre. With rave reviews, the tour would become one of the Top Grossing Tours of 2002 (Pollstar).
In November of 2001, after twenty years in the making, Manilow released his critically acclaimed Here at the Mayflower.
Among his 43 albums are such diverse recordings as Manilow Sings Sinatra (1998), Singin’ with the Big Bands (1994), Showstoppers (1991), Swing Street (1987), 2:00 A.M. Paradise Café (1984), and many others, including 38 Top 40 Hits. In addition, every album he has produced for other artists, including Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, and Dionne Warwick, has been nominated for Grammy Awards.

Manilow’s film credits include the Oscar-nominated “Ready To Take A Chance Again” (from Foul Play), a song for the soundtrack of Walt Disney’s Oliver and Company, and the soundtracks for the animated features Thumbelina and The Pebble and the Penguin.

Manilow’s television appearances include the 2002 one-hour CBS-TV special, Ultimate Manilow, taped in Hollywood at the Kodak Theatre. In 2000 alone, he taped Manilow Live! for DirectTV, followed by the Manilow Country special on TNN. A two-hour A&E special, Barry Manilow: Live by Request aired in 1996 as the highest rated music show in the network's history. Manilow also has appeared on the TV comedies Murphy Brown, Ally McBeal, and Will & Grace.

Manilow’s career in the theater ranges from his Tony Award-winning Broadway debut in 1977 to the June 2001 opening of Could It Be Magic? – The Barry Manilow Songbook. Manilow worked with Mitzie & Ken Welch to create a show in which the music is brought to life by an ensemble of five very talented performers and a six-piece band. The world premiere of his musical, Harmony (with book and lyrics by Bruce Sussman), enjoyed a successful run at the La Jolla Playhouse and is anticipated to head to Broadway in 2004.

His collaboration with Sussman also created Barry Manilow's Copacabana - The Musical. Inspired by his hit single, the elaborate two-act musical spectacular ran to packed houses on London's West End for 18 months, a national company toured the U.S., and international productions are currently on-going.

Manilow made his literary debut in 1987 with the publication of his autobiographical Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise.

Manilow is involved with worthwhile charities and humanitarian efforts around the world. He is the national spokesperson for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. He is also a member of the National Academy of Jazz Board of Governors and the Music Center of Los Angeles. His charity involvement includes The Prince's Trust, United Way, the Starlight Foundation, numerous organizations fighting the battle against AIDS, and many others.
