Beanie Sigel 'The B.Coming' album

Beanie Sigel is real, like milk. In the wide world of rap, credibility is currency and the general of Roc-A-Fella Records, Beanie Sigel, is a boom-bap billionaire, ifyasmellme?

As if his hard knock up-bringing
on the streets of West Philly were not enough, as evidenced by his
two brilliantly dark, but nonetheless gold certified LPs, The Truth
and The Reason, the last year of Sigel’s life has been more drama
filled than an afternoon of ABC soaps. Gun charges, assault charges,
drug rehab, court dates, federal sentencing, a hung jury and a
mistrial. To many a person, the aforementioned trials and
tribulations would be the end of the world. For the man known as Mac
Mittens, though, it’s just the ingredients for the album of his
career. By the time most rap artists get to album number three
they’re running low on content and inspiration, but on Be Coming,
Sigel finds himself at his creative zenith, his back to the wall,
struggling against all odds.

“I
never tried to make records that were outside of my zone,” says
Sigel, “But before I would make songs about being in the club and
shit like that, ‘cause running with Jay, that’s what I was doing.
But now, that’s so far from my reality that you’re not going to
see anything like that on this new album.” Indeed, Be Coming, which
features production from Just Blaze, TK, TK, and TK, is unrelentingly
hard, yet thoughtful, and deeply personal. Drawing from the same well
of emotion which fueled classic songs like “What Your Life Like”
and “The Truth”, Sigel is looking inside, trying to grip with the
chaos he lives in outside. Songs like “TK” and “TK”
illustrate Sigel’s deadly beauty behind the mic. “Making this
album I didn’t give any thought to touching on any particular
subjects,” he explains, “I just listened to beats and as soon as
I heard one that spoke to me, I just let that beat pull what was
inside of me out, and recorded on the spot. I didn’t even think
about covering bases or anything like that, I just made every song
that needed to be made, and for that reason, I couldn’t even pick a
favorite this time.”

One
of the LP’s true standouts is the Bon Jovi-sampled Just Blaze
track, “Dead or Alive,” which features label mate Cam’ron.
“That track was just hard,” says Sigel of the very appropriate
selection, “And when you hear that chorus, that just speaks to me
and my situation. Then you throw Cam on there—what could better
than that?” Equally exciting is “I Gotta Have It”, featuring
Peedi Crack and Twista, which is both catchy and danceable, without
being even vaguely “club” or cheesy, thanks to it’s brilliant
old school energy. “I wanted to keep the collaboration within my
crew for this album,” Sigel says, “there are non-Roc artists on
there, like Scarface and Redman, but they’re all people that make
sense working with me.”

“I
called this album Be Coming, because I felt like that’s what this
whole time since The Reason was about,” Sigel says. “It’s like
with all these things going on in my life, the trial, the hung
jury—it’s all shaping me for what I’m supposed to become.”
And it is out of that sense of cathartic transition that the LP,
easily Beanie’s darkest and most serious, finds its forward
thinking niche. “I’m trying to establish things, like businesses,
for my kids and myself, ‘cause all of this is showing me the bigger
picture of what life is about, so I’m trying to plan for that.”

So
as Sigel gets ready to do a short bid for his weapons charge, and
awaits the word on his retrial, he’s purged himself of his
concerns, doubts, and fears, putting his ducks in a row. No matter
how his legal drama shakes down, Sigel has made lemonade out of
life’s lemons, crafting what will undoubtedly be remembered s the
album of his career, truly the only thing he could do to create
future security for himself and his loved ones. “I’ve never been
more proud of anything I’ve ever done,” he says, “and the whole
way along I knew how good it was coming out, so it was never even any
stress. After doing recording this album, I’m ready for whatever
happens next.”
