Finally, Kansas City, Missouri has a hip-hop group willing to represent for the city and not just self. Block Life Entertainment Group, formed by solo artists Dandrae “Cku Koo Bird” Jones and Dennis “Wescrook” Westbrook in 2001, have spent the past five years on the grind 24/7. In between working a 9- 5 and hustlin’ on the block, the duo has been able to establish a record label, create a debut album, and gain several prospective artists. The two met at a previous label where they were both in bad financial deals. They knew that to really succeed in this cut throat industry they would have to take matters into their own hands. From there, they began building a business.
Hailing from the East side of KCMO, Crook and Bird set out on a journey to create their first joint album Bleed the Block, to be released in fall of 2006. The title came about as a tribute to the block life they’ve lived. When it comes to style, they are comparable to none with respects to the influences of Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., as well as Jay-Z, Nas, the Bay area, and the Southern crunk and screw styles. They spit real life situations with a polished fluency only the Mid- West could create. So what makes the album Bleed the Block any different then the rest of Kansas City’s hip-hop? Everything. A lot of the music out of Kansas City is made for self, but this is something that the group says they wanted to do for their block, showing life from their point of view. The group has no regrets about the time it took to get here, and after five years the world will finally get to see what KC has to offer. “This album is gonna be the heat. The most well put-together album to come out of Kansas City. Representin’ hustlas, male or female, from all blocks worldwide.”
The label has a lot more in store with their next artists Shady Pacino and Cousin Dubbles soon to be released, as well as prospective artist Slim Vellie, currently of The Vellie Family. They have already begun establishing their name by opening for artists such as Adina Howard, E- 40, Ja Rule, Juvenile, and Ludacris. Their song, Blood Rush was featured on the Murder Dogg compilation album Murder Dogg: Best of Best. They’ve also been seen in the Kansas City Star, Mo Cheese Rap Pages, and various other magazines. They have travelled to the Southeast and around the Midwest for various performances. As for the future, Block Life sees billions. They aren’t here for any one hit wonders, instead, they are in search of an endless future and refuse to settle until they achieve it.
