Send to a FriendFor the first time, the recordings from Bob Marley & The Wailers that were the foundation of their rise to international stardom, prior to signing with Island Records in 1972, will be issued in cohesive, major label packages with the approval of the Marley family. The three-CD, 71-selection Grooving Kingston 12 (The JAD Masters 1970-1972) (Hip-O Records), released March 2, 2004, marks the first of a trio of box sets and, boasting many rare as well as unreleased recordings, is an essential addition to any Bob Marley & The Wailers or reggae collection.

The sets, comprising more than 200 tracks recorded from 1967 to 1972, bring together for the first time virtually the entire recorded works of Bob Marley & The Wailers under one roof since Universal Music also owns the Island 1972-1980 repertoire. While a portion of the repertoire has been released as singles and via albums, it has been haphazard at best.? In addition, the series will for the first time result in royalties from this period going to the children of Bob Marley, the Estate of Peter Tosh, and the last surviving Wailer, Bunny Wailer.
Each installment encompasses tracks recorded for JAD Records, co-founded by Danny Sims, who gave Marley his first big break. Grooving Kingston 12 includes singles issued during the formative years of the Tuff Gong label, productions with Lee "Scratch" Perry, and London-produced JAD masters (some previously unreleased). Each track has been digitally remastered and restored from the original masters. The box set is presented in a book-style package featuring detailed annotation, essay and many rare photos.
The musical highlights include the early classics "Concrete Jungle," "Screw Face," "Lively Up Yourself" (a previously unreleased mix), "Trenchtown Rock," "Lick Samba," "Satisfy My Soul," "Kaya," "African Herbsman," "Small Axe," "Dreamland," "Keep On Moving" and "Sun Is Shining." Along with the first-ever releases of the near-mythical "Music Gonna Teach" (aka "Music Lesson") and the JAD recording of "I'm Still Waiting" are numerous rarities, including the legendary eight-song Acoustic Medley of Marley singing in Sweden in 1971 and several instrumental and dub versions. Also heard are seminal reggae artists such as Big Youth, U Roy, Johnny Lover, Lester Sterling's All Stars, and Tommy McCook.
Grooving Kingston 12 provides insight into a pre-celebrity Marley who was a streetwise sharpdresser influenced by the U.S. civil rights movement and the music and fashion of Black America. He sang of rebellion, Rasta, partying, uprisings and love. Long before the world discovered him, both Bob Marley & The Wailers and Kingston were grooving.
