Cantankerous are a collective of masked renegades from the UK, and their mission is to take on the war mongering consumerist culture spreading across the globe. Pirating elements of ragga, punk, dancehall, hardcore, electronic and industrial music, their thundering mix of distorted guitars, hammering beats, block-shaking sub-bass, innovative melodies and fearless lyrics are the perfect vehicle for their message; in the end it's going to be us or "Them". It's a call to arms for every street, club, corner, and building where people are prepared to resist injustice.

    Cantankerous

Like a warning shot, the EP announces Cantankerous' impending assault, done in a voice unlike anything else, mutating the rhythm and cadence of reggae and dancehall "toasting" into a guttural growl and a rallying chant. At the center of it all is "Fleshroast" an anthem so lyrically and musically daring that it takes on the Christian right and the Klan with soaring guitars that break down into what sounds like folk music from the Black Mountains, all in the matter of minutes.

Six people wearing haute black balaclavas and Celtics uniforms, Cantankerous could be just about anyone, and that's precisely the point. The band has consciously rejected the current star system by presenting a strong visual image that has nothing to do with any of their true identities. In fact, even their label knows very little about them. Out of the masks they will remain unidentifiable on the streets but it will be impossible to mistake the sound for anything else.

This is only the beginning -- look out for the full-length album "Girl with a Halo" in January on Tommy Boy!
