Even as pop icon Cher continues to wave a long goodbye to arenas with her stunningly successful farewell tour, she scores another first with the only compilation to focus solely on her ?80s and ?90s hits on Geffen and Warner Bros. The Best Of Cher, Vol. 2 edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (Hip-O Records), released January 13, 2004, features 12 selections from her 1987 to 1999 renaissance.

    Cher

After enormous hits in the '60s and '70s, solo and with Sonny, Cher became a movie star, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Silkwood and culminating in 1987 with an Academy Award for Best Actress in Moonstruck. Also that year, she returned to music, this time on Geffen--and a nine-year absence from the charts was broken.

Cher (1987) went platinum, broke into the Top 40 and notched the hits "I Found Someone" (#10), produced and co-written by Michael Bolton, and "We All Sleep Alone" (#14), produced and written by Desmond Child, Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. The follow-up, 1989's Heart Of Stone, went triple platinum and #10. It spun off the gold #3 "If I Could Turn Back Time," written and co-produced by Diane Warren; #8 "Just Like Jesse James," produced by Child, written by Child and Warren, and Top 20 "Heart Of Stone" (here in its remix version). The album also reprised another, earlier-released gold single, the #6 Oscar-nominated "After All," a duet with Peter Cetera from the soundtrack to the film Chances Are.

In 1990, Cher combined acting and singing for the first time when she starred in Mermaids and sang in both the film and on the soundtrack: Her cover of the '60s standard "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" went Top 40. Her final Geffen album, Love Hurts (1991), went gold, and included the Top 20 "Love And Understanding," written and co-produced by Warren, and Top 40 "Save Up All Your Tears," penned by Warren and Child.

Moving to Warner Bros., 1996's It's A Man's World yielded the Adult Contemporary Top 10 "One By One." Then 1998's Believe made history: When the title track hit #1, Cher set the record for the longest hiatus between #1s (1965-1999) of any pop artist and became the oldest female to ever earn a #1. The platinum "Believe" also won Cher her first Grammy (Best Dance Recording). In addition, the quadruple platinum album spun off the #1 Dance hit "All Or Nothing."

Though exiting the stage--major tours anyway--Cher remains one of the most popular and recognizable pop stars of our time.

The series 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection, featuring new "best of" albums from the most significant music artists of the past century, is the most successful single artist series in music history.
