I got the call from Danger Mouse a year ago. “Yo Zone, I got this beat and I want you and Jemini the Gifted One to get on it. We’ll record it at your studio.” So I pick up these two ghetto ass superstars up from the subway station (what kind of rap stars ride public transportation?)… Jemini is rockin some loud yellow outfit, like them rainsuits Heavy D and them wore back in the day.

    Danger Mouse and Jemini

The man has a chinchilla fur collar on his winter coat as well. Tacky. The minute we get to Pimp Palace East, my studio, Danger Mouse asks to borrow one of my Grandma’s porcelain antique tea cups to pour his 40oz beer in. Jemini asks for hot water for some English tea bags he had. He drinks tea? That ain’t pimpin, but whatever. I shoulda sent my two bougeis (??) yuppie Pimp Palace intern chicks to get the cups and the water, but noooo, I had to leave these two dudes in the room alone with my broads and get it myself. How long does water take to boil? Maybe the length of your average rap song (3 minutes), chicks were totally nude, sprawled out on top of my mixing board doing some strip club routine!

Now I’m J-Zone aka Captain Back$lap. I talk all slick in my rhymes about hookin chicks and what I couldn’t accomplish in 3 weeks these two hoodrich cats did in 3 minutes… in my Pimp Palace. What the…? Pimps don’t drink English tea. You can’t ride the subway and still own a fur coat. Not to mention Danger Mouse’s old house was literally located on ‘Trim Street’. And there was always ‘trim’ in that place, but they were always out by 5am (sorry Jay-Z, he out pimped you). But then he wears some Hanna-Barberra ass mouse suit up in HHC Magazine? On their new album, the lead cut, ‘What You Want?’, sees a full choir (most of whom are probably even appalled by Young MC) sing about “a bullet in the clip” and “good dick for a bitch” like they’d sing about Jesus Christ himself. If you told me these two had Britney Spears buttnaked on a tour bus, I’d believe you. And you can bet that within a week of the Olsen Twins becoming legal, pimpin will be in effect. Well, these two symbolize the oxymoron of ‘Ghetto Pop Life’. Oh yeah, that’s the album title too. Danger Mouse on the tracks, Jemini on the raps and harmonies. It’s like the Backstreet Boys visit the Evans house in the projects on ‘Good Times’. That’s my only analysis. Guests include Tha Liks (Alkoholiks), The Pharcyde, Prince Poetry (of Organized konfusion) and some kid named J-Zone (aka Captain Back$lap). While it’s the shiznit that all these unsung heroes come trough and pump up the party and pass with flyin colors, the real tequila shot is the Shaq and Kobe team of Jem and DM themselves. Unlike most of their mid-90’s peers, Jem comes back into the spotlight sharper than ever, actually improving his hype-to-conversational over-the-course-of-three-bars flow (see ‘Take Care of Buisness’). Mercury Records should be informed… ya’ll missed the boat. And DM manages to pull from the scrapbook of veterans like 45 King and Prince Paul without biting and use that formula to create a totally new sound behind the boards. Musical, but still thumpin in the trunk. Haven’t heard that in a minute. The lost art of making ‘songs’ (i.e. not three 16 bar battle verses with the rapper of the moment cut up on the hook or a cut out bin chorus) has been dug up by these two pop stars. Just a shame that they had to steal my ho’s. When you listen to this album, rock your Calvin Klein jeans, roll one leg up and make sure your doo rag is pulled tight, b*tch.

    J-Zone (aka Captain Back$lap).
