Produced by the Grammy-winning Jack Douglas (John Lennon, The Who, Aerosmith), and mixed by fellow Grammy winner Michael H. Brauer (Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan), singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist DANIELLE EVIN’s self-titled debut is a collection of songs with rich signature vocals and melodies that linger with the listener long after they are heard.
Recruited by EVIN and Douglas, a group of top-shelf musicians combine their talents with EVIN to record the CD, which Douglas layers with cinematic string arrangements and dramatic soundscapes. “What I find great about Jack,” EVIN says, “is that he knows just when to push, and just when to sit back in order to pull the best things out.” Evident on such tracks as the jangley guitar-driven modern classic “Five Wishes,” the sorrowful “What I’d Give,” the hidden bonus track “Crocodile,” with a contagious hook, and the sweeping gem “Baby Be Mine.”
Recorded and engineered by Jay Messina (Miles Davis, Supertramp, Cheap Trick). DANIELLE EVIN finds its namesake not only front and center behind the mic, but also playing guitars, piano and Wurlitzer. The disc also features the guest vocals and violin talents of acclaimed singer/songwriter Tracy Bonham.
“During recording, I actually felt relaxed and completely at ease. Usually I’m a big control freak, but with Jack and the guys, I didn’t feel like I needed to be.”
If nothing else, a good album is a glimpse into its writer’s life: revealing the great, and the heart-crushing. That’s exactly what the eponymous debut from DANIELLE EVIN is—a snapshot of all those extremes: “It’s a diary of all the things that went wrong, and all the things that went right,” she says. “There are love songs, happy songs, and who-did-me-wrong songs.”
Born in Los Angeles, DANIELLE EVIN grew up dividing her time between New York City and L.A., as a result of her parents’ careers in the creative side of the entertainment business. She started playing piano at eight, violin in the school orchestra at twelve, guitar at thirteen, and writing songs at fourteen.
An early project scored a deal with Atlantic in 1998 and a rave review from Billboard making note of her “potent voice and passionate delivery,” but the timing was off: EVIN “hadn’t lived enough,” she says. She was still trying to find her voice. After stints as a sous chef and an assistant (“I was the world’s worst: I was just completely focused on my music. I was a terrible person to hire.”), she co-produced the New York-based indie band Azma, and even developed an irreverent musical cartoon, but finally returned to her true passion—songwriting. In fact to her credit, DANIELLE scored a triple-platinum international hit in seven countries (Czech Republic, Malaysia, Australia, Greece, Argentina, and Canada), with a song she wrote titled “Forgive Me This” (performed by the Greek artist Anna Vissi).
“Writing songs is the only way I can really say what’s going on, and clearly articulate myself,” EVIN says. “I communicate better in my songs. It’s like having a sixth sense.”
Currently based in New York City, DANIELLE has honed her craft in clubs up and down the East Coast in the last few years. She and her band will continue to tour throughout the year in the U.S. in support of her upcoming self-titled CD slated for release on May 16, 2006, on LateralView Records distributed through Red / Sony BMG.
Over the years, EVIN continues to evolve as an artist/songwriter. “I’m maybe only slightly wiser,” she quips. When she went into record her self-titled debut, she says, “I was looking to do something that felt like an honest document of my life. I think that’s what every song is, a document of what you’ve seen or heard. Every song is a piece of me.”
