At just 22 years old, Chicago born and bred singer/songwriter DYLAN LLOYD has already showcased an ability to craft poignant songs in a multitude of genres by infusing soul, pop, blues and rock. His impressive catalog spans celebrated work with previous outfits PANGEA and LOOSE CHANGE, and with the 2009 release of his debut solo EP THE TRINITY, Lloyd has set the stage for a leap to the forefront of today’s music scene.
Dylan Lloyd began to play the piano at the age of 5, teaching himself the fundamentals of the instrument. His first formal lesson didn’t come until he was 12 years old, and it was then that he was introduced to techniques of jazz music. By incorporating a newfound understanding of jazz with his own developing style, Dylan began to assemble early musical creations that blended inspiration from a variety of genres.
By 2002, Dylan had grown a selection of original work in his personal catalog. Emotive words, dense orchestration and captivating melody became mainstay elements that anchored the mark of his unique sound.
At the age of 15, Dylan Lloyd brought his writing talents to a burgeoning band from the south side of Chicago called PANGEA. In his days as a young front man for the outfit, Dylan enjoyed successes throughout the Midwest region as well as songwriting highlights that began to garner positive acclaim. Pangea grew a dedicated following with the release of their album The Morning Rise along with sharing the stage with national headliners among the likes of Medeski, Martin & Wood and others.
Though Pangea split in the spring of 2005, Lloyd retained ownership of the material he had written for the band and continued to bring the music to fans throughout the Chicago area. As his musical presence continued to grow, Dylan’s next phase was to form the collective outfit LOOSE CHANGE.
Musical collaborations fueled the growth of both Loose Change as a band and Dylan Lloyd as the group’s principle songwriter. The foursome—which included drummer Matt Rezetko, guitarist Wally Ulreich and bassist Kevin Miller—hit the studio with renowned STYX producer Gary Loizzo to compile recordings of what proved to be Dylan’s most developed material to date. The group brought the songs to resounding live audiences though their collective existence really remained as a studio project.
The Loose Change recording sessions ultimately became an early incarnation of what would become Dylan Lloyd’s debut solo effort THE TRINITY EP. As he helmed song arrangements and fine-tuned sonic elements of the tracks, Dylan’s mission as a solo artist, writer and performer became clear.
Taking cues from a span of influences and artistic inspirations shaped the musical progression of THE TRINITY EP. Classic essentials of Billy Joel, Prince, Elton John and The Beatles meet modern principles of pop and rock from the likes of Ben Folds, Foo Fighters and John Mayer on the debut disc. “The songs for me are an unconscious refreshment to the brain,” explains Dylan. “They are fresh songs that at the same time maintain elements of something old that may have been forgotten about in the music that people love.”
These familiar musical elements are layered with Dylan’s narrative of eloquent lyrics that characterize stirring subjects from seduction to heroism. THE TRINITY also exists as his platform to leap forward into a fierce musical climate, eagerly anticipating the challenges he faces ahead. Dylan explains “I know that it will be a challenge, but I look forward to making my footprint in the evolution of mainstream music. I also look forward to learning and growing more as an individual as I move forward towards the ultimate goal of success with my music.”
THE TRINITY was released January 11, 2009 and is available at iTunes now. As Dylan celebrates this debut release, he’ll bring live performances to fans old and new throughout his hometown and beyond without ceasing to continue recording new material for a follow-up release that is set to surface before the end of the year.
