E.S. POSTHUMUS, a.k.a. Helmut and Franz Vonlichten, do their creative work with some of the industry’s biggest players but remain a mystery to most. Jerry Bruckheimer chose their recording “Nara” as a theme to his hit TV Cold Case series but has never met them.

    ES Posthumus

CBS’s Executive Producer of Sports commissioned them to write the theme to their NFL coverage. Famed civil rights attorney Morris Dees personally requested numerous songs for the Oscar nominated “Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks” and has yet to lay eyes on them. Some in the industry aren’t even sure that Helmut and Franz are their real names. But E.S. POSTHUMUS, whose music is based on Pythagorean Philosophy (further explanation below) and who have heretofore eluded the spotlight are about to step into the light with the May 3rd release of their underground classic UNEARTHED on 33rd Street Records/Bayside Distribution.

The songs on UNEARTHED pay homage to ancient cultures with their titles (Cuzco, Pompeii, Harrapa and Ebla), chanting, classical instrumentation and archaic use of Latin, yet they are as contemporary as Deep Forest and Enigma. The music is at one moment dark and choral and at another light and airy; one moment you are in Germany and then in Ireland or South America. It’s a film score, clearly cinematic, but there’s no movie - rather there are dozens of movies since these creations from E.S. POSTHUMUS have found their way into numerous films, film trailers and television shows: Spiderman; Matrix Reloaded; Ali; The Clearing; Team America; The Recruit; Time Machine; Planet of the Apes, Minority Report; Cold Case; Six Feet Under and many more.

According to the brothers Vonlichten who formed their band in 2000, E.S. Posthumus is an acronym for “Experimental Sounds” and “Posthumus” is a word which represents “all things past.” The music is inspired by the Pythagorean Philosophy which states that “music is the harmonization of opposites; the conciliation of warring elements.” E.S. Posthumus compose using both past and present music, instruments, orchestration, harmony and technology, and their studio uses the latest technology; nevertheless, their prize possessions are “the ancient Silvertone 8086 wire recorder and a 1952 Neuman am32b cutting lathe and of course, live musicians whenever possible.”

UNEARTHED is CDBaby.com’s #3 All Time Best Selling CD and has attracted an eclectic group of devotees from famed deejay/producer/artist Rob Dougan to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke, who requested a copy of UNEARTHED for his wedding march. Meanwhile, the elusive Vonlichtens remain perennially mysterious and in demand; they have composed new theme music for the NFL on CBS titled “Posthumus Zone”, the new theme to the U.S. Open on CBS titled “Center Court” and more.
