Fat Freddys Drop have been in studio lockdown in 2008 recording the follow up to their multi-award winning debut album Based On A True Story (B.O.A.T.S.). The as yet untitled album is set for a worldwide digital release November 2008. The first official release from the album will be The Camel featuring UK singer Alice Russell duelling on the vocals with Joe Dukie. The band are also back in the UK touring in Nov and Dec – this ties in with the digital release of their new album. They play Birmingham Academy (Nov 14), Manchester Academy (Nov 15), Norwich UEA (Dec 3) and London’s Roundhouse (Dec 4) – full European tour details are at the bottom of the biography.
Fat Freddy’s Drop’s sound is a unique boil up of bottom heavy beats, future funk and freaky sidesteps drops. The Freddy’s family of musicians evolved in Wellington (NZ) through a multitude of musical incarnations, from funk jam bands, reggae sound systems and jazz improvisation cliques to live hi-tek dub-soul experiments.
Freddy’s focus in 2008 has been studio lockdown - recording their second studio album, due for release Nov ‘08. The album is the follow-up to Based On A True Story, the debut album that re-wrote musical history at home (NZ) and unleashing the slow burning, future-funk voodoo worldwide.
FFD is now pleased to announce an extensive European and UK tour to support the worldwide digital release of their new album (as yet untitled) in November ‘08. After working on the follow-up to their breakthrough album Based On A True Story (see below) for the past two years, jamming live on stage and recording in the studio FFD will launch their album digitally in the UK & Europe. The band hope the tour and album release will be welcome news for all those disappointed by the recent cancellation of their August tour to UK and Europe.
Live. Fat Freddy’s Drop are becoming a European festival favourite. They have performed at some of Europe’s biggest festivals including Glastonbury, Roskilde, Bestival, The Big Chill, Sonar, Isle Of Wight, Printemp de Bourge, Summer Series at Somerset House and sold out 1,000 plus capacity show all over the UK as well as Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo in London.
In 2007 Freddy’s played Glastonbury Festival. Only the second ever band to represent Aotearoa/NZ at the mystical Vale of Avalon, Freddy’s played the Dance Stage before slaying the Jazz World Stage.
The first official release from the forthcoming album will be The Camel featuring UK singer Alice Russell duelling on the vocals with Joe Dukie. The Camel, running at an epic 9 minutes and 30 seconds, will be released worldwide on limited edition vinyl, CD and digital download on 28 July by The Drop/Kartel.
As with most Freddy songs The Camel was born as a beat on the MPC whilst on the road, the loping rhythm crafted by DJ Fitchie in a sweltering hotel room before the band headlined Barcelona’s Sonar Day Festival. Back in Fitchie’s studio, The Drop in Lyall Bay, NZ, Jetlag Johnson added a one take blues guitar lick and Dobie Blaze delivered some deep funk on his analogue keyboards.
