Send to a FriendIn a sold-out tour running nationwide October through November 2003, the trio of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen put on their G3 show: three guitarists putting on a nearly 3-hour show to a crowd of awestruck fans. "G3 Live: Rockin' in the Free World" delivers this on a double-CD and MusicRemedy brings you the review.

Having achieved tremendous success and critical praise in their own careers, this tour marked the first time the three influential guitarists have joined forces on the same stage. Continuing with the same successful formula as in years past, fans were treated to individual sets by each guitarist with his own band before joining Satriani and his band on stage for an all-star jam session.
The lineup for the first-ever G3 tour in 1996 featured Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. A DVD with performance highlights from that tour was subsequently released and has since been certified platinum. In 1997, Satriani and Vai again reunited adding Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Robert Fripp to the bill. In May 1998 the tour headed over to Europe where Satriani was joined by Uli Jon Roth and former Scorpions guitarist Michael Schenker. The 2001 G3 tour featured the team of Satriani and Vai again, this time adding John Petrucci of Dream Theater.
The album consists out 2 discs. Disc 1 consists out of three parts:
- Joe Satriani (track 1 to 5);
- Steve Vai (track 6 to 8);
- Yngwie Malmsteen (track 9 to 13).
Disc 2 is entitled "The G3 Jam" which consists out of 3 songs with a length of 29 minutes and 56 seconds. The CDs are also your key to exclusive G3 content on their websites.
Joe Satriani starts disc 1 of with a couple of flammable tracks like "Crystal Planet" and "The Mystical Potato Head Thing". On "Whispering A Prayer" Steve Vai shows what a human being can do with only a guitar! After this Yngwie Malmsteen throws in "Blitzkrieg" (reading the title I don't have to explain how the track is ;-) ).
On disc 2 they join forces which lead to a couple of high energy tracks. With a minimum of singing Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen set the roof on fire. Many of you will defitinely like the Jimi Hendrix track "Little Wing".
This double-CD will be very interested to have in your collection. Three guitarists putting on an incredible show to a crowd of awesome fans. This live element makes the album even better and enjoyable. The G3 are rockin' in the Free World.
