According to the Coalition for The Homeless, in March 2008 there were 34,638 homeless people living in the Municipal Shelter system in New York of which 14,715 were children. The inspiration for Torch by Heroes of The Dancefloor came from a homeless woman on the street of New York who was about 36 weeks pregnant and who was begging in the rain. She looked completely desperate.
Heroes of The Dancefloor will release Torch and the lead single “Same Scandal” on INgrooves the week of Thanksgiving, this Tuesday November 25th. ALL of the proceeds from the sale of Torch will go to two charities working with the homeless in New York: Picture The Homeless and Coalition For The Homeless (LINK). NO money will go to the musicians including any mechanicals, royalties or publishing.
Torch features Gary Alesbrook who tours with Kasabian and Scissor Sisters on Trumpet, James Morton on Sax and Dan Moore on Keyboards and Bass (who both tour with former James Brown sideman Pee Wee Ellis), Guitar by Alex Hutchins and Vocals by Mamazu. Mixes and remixes have come from top US DJs such as Nick Chacona and Anthony Mansfield and top US and UK engineers including Adam Noble in the Strongroom, Joe Fields and Sam Dillon in Soho Studios, Doug McBride in Gravity Studios in Chicago, Grammy-award winning Thom Russo in Los Angeles and Grammy-award-winning Mick Glossop in London.

Picture The Homeless is an award winning grass roots organization in New York City that was founded and is led by homeless New Yorkers in 1999. They are the only organization in NYC, and one of the few nationally, that is led by homeless people. Their organizing campaigns focus on changing the structural causes of homelessness as well as making improvements in the delivery of life sustaining services to homeless individuals and families. As a complement to the soup kitchens, shelters and advocacy organizations, it is critical that homeless people themselves have a seat at the table where public policy decisions are made that impact our lives and communities. Picture The Homeless is proud to have been selected for a Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award. Their motto is Don't Talk About Us, Talk With Us!
The Coalition For The Homeless is the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women, and children. They believe that affordable housing, sufficient food, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. Since 1981, they've fought successfully for lasting solutions to homelessness through our renowned advocacy. They provide housing, food, job training, crisis services and children's programs to over 3,500 New Yorkers each day.
Previously, Heroes of The Dancefloor released its debut album Momentum the proceeds of which benefited the San Francisco-based organization Coalition On Homelessness, the sister charity of New York’s Picture The Homeless.
Heroes Of The Dancefloor biography
Heroes Of The Dancefloor’s “Torch” is a fusion of big band and swing Jazz, mixed with Hip Hop, R&B and dub influences with deep souldful vocals. The lead single ‘Same Scandal’ from “Torch” is an infectious dance track with a funky house groove. “Torch” follows the underground success of “Momentum,” the first album of a series from Heroes Of The Dancefloor, which in its entirety will benefit the homeless.
According to the annual report by the Coalition on Homelessness "New York has reached a new record for the number of homeless families living in our shelters. In this year alone the number of people living in homeless shelters has increased by 11% and the number of children has increased by 18% to over 14,000.
“Torch” lead vocals come from the playful and expressive chops of Mamazu; Gary Alesbrook, the trumpet player touring and recording with Kasabian and the Scissor Sisters; and James Morton, the sax player and keyboard player touring and recording with Pee Wee Ellis from the band of James Brown.
Mixes and remixes have come from top US DJs such as Nick Chacona and Anthony Mansfield as well as top US and UK engineers, including Adam Noble in the Strongroom, Joe Fields and Sam Dillon in Soho studios, Doug McBride in Gravity Studios in Chicago, Grammy Award winning Thom Russo in Los Angeles, and Grammy Award winning Mick Glossop in London.
Last year the album ‘Momentum’ was released digitally by INgrooves and was distributed as a cd by independent distribution collective. The record reached no 450 in the radio charts in the US without any promotion. A house remix by Amy McDonald’s producer (Mercury records) was released by INgrooves this year. ALL the money from these previous records (all mechanicals publishing royalties etc) go to the charity that looks after the homeless in San Francisco, Coalition on homelessness (www.cohsf.org), the sister charity to Picture The Homeless in New York.

Picture the Homeless
Picture the Homeless was founded on the principle that homeless people have civil and human rights regardless of our race, creed, color or economic status. Picture the Homeless was founded and is led by homeless people. We refuse to accept being neglected, and we demand that our voices and experience are heard at all levels of decision-making that impact us. We oppose the 'quality of life laws' that criminalize homeless people in any form by the city, state and national governments. We work to change these laws and policies as well as to challenge the root causes of homelessness. Our strategies include grassroots organizing, direct action, educating homeless people about their rights, public education, changing media stereotypes, and building relationships with allies.
Coalition for the Homeless
The Coalition for the Homeless is the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women, and children. We are dedicated to the principle that decent shelter, sufficient food, affordable housing, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. Since its incorporation in 1981 as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, the Coalition has worked through litigation, public education, and direct services to ensure that these goals are realized.
