Ilse DeLange 'The Great Escape' album

Great artists are always special people. Enormously talented, ambitious, tenacious, headstrong and always willing to go the extra mile. But only the real superstars are courageous, even reckless. Most artists choose the well trodden path of proven success, few dare venture into uncharted territory. They feel the need to always develop their talents, and so they boldly go where they’ve never gone before. They don’t want any restrictions in any way when expressing themselves, and so they spread their wings.

Ilse DeLange is one of those courageous ones. Listen to her new album The Great Escape and marvel at the giant leap forward this singer, songwriter and musician has taken since her previous CD Clean Up (2003). She dares to express herself like never before, showing an incredible range of emotions. Never holding back in thirteen gloriously beautiful songs about life, love and the world around her, Ilse sings, whispers, shouts if need be to reach her audience – straight from her heart to theirs.

Ilse DeLange has never settled for second best. For this reason she recorded her debut album World Of Hurt (1998) in Nashville – an unusual step for a Dutch artist. She worked with the most renowned musicians of the city. And she asked Barry Beckett, a veritable legend who worked with the likes of Dylan, Dire Straits and Paul Simon, to produce her album. Consequently World Of Hurt sold more than 500.000 copies in the Netherlands alone, making it one of the best selling albums ever. Follow-up album Livin On Love (2000) also turned into an international affair. Ilse travelled to studios in the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands and chalked up yet another platinum album. Clean Up (2003) was recorded in the legendary Capitol B studio in Hollywood. Together with producer Bruce Gaitsch and Blue Miller Ilse wrote all of the songs, and once again the album became a smash hit in the Netherlands.

For The Great Escape Ilse DeLange very much wanted to work with her favourite producer Patrick Leonard: “I just love Patrick’s production of Elton John’s Songs From The West Coast. It’s a record with a sixties sound to it that really appeals to me. And I thought Jewel’s album Spirit was stunning, I really liked the acoustic sound of that one.”
Keyboard player, composer and songwriter Leonard worked with greats like Roger Waters, Rod Stewart and Madonna (a.o. La Isla Bonita, Who’s That Girl, Like a Prayer and Frozen). “I liked how he went to extremes in his work with Madonna. He produced very organic, pure, acoustic, intimate stuff with her, but also Frozen – there is a considerable contrast. I find that fascinating.”

Ilse managed to get an appointment with Patrick Leanard in Los Angeles. “I was pretty nervous, especially since at first Patrick didn’t seem to know who I was and what I wanted from him. But we hit it off right away and that same afternoon we wrote our first song together, Carry Hope, that actually made it onto the album.

Ilse DeLange and Patrick Leonard inspired each other enormously: “Every day that we worked together we wrote a song. He is such a virtuoso musician, whenever he played the piano or came up with sounds from his electronic keyboards, he immediately inspired me to write melodies and lyrics. And in doing so often a new song was born within only a couple of hours.”

Ilse met Leonard early 2004 and since then she travelled to the States several times to write songs. Eventually they had to choose from dozens of songs they wrote together, plus some thirty tracks that had earlier been written by Ilse with her previous producer Bruce Gaitsch. With this many songs to choose from, The Great Escape ended up have many different colours. “I think however, that my voice pulls all these songs together, so no matter how great the diversity in songs it still makes for one coherent collection. Thanks to Patrick I’ve used my voice in ways I have never tried before. The songs themselves demanded it: I had to adapt my way of singing to each individual song, and Patrick writes in such a unique fashion that I was motivated to sing in ways I did not dare to sing before. Very exciting, because if something like that succeeds it feels great!”

Writing songs together means exposing your very soul to each other. Every now and then this led to emotional scenes. “We have cried together on occasion, yes. But then you also know that you have touched upon something real. It happened to us while writing When, the last song of the record, and also with Waterfall. It was a very special time for the both of us, there were a lot of things going on in our lives. I went through a lot the last couple of years, and I would talk about that with Patrick, which would touch both of us emotionally. And so all songs are based on real feelings and stories, but they have been written in such a way that the subject matters are not entirely obvious. We know exactly what every song is about, but the listener has plenty of room for his or her own interpretations.”
Still, the songs are so dear to her that she cannot help but talk about some of them: “Reach For The Light is a beautiful start of the album, because it is about the fact that I still believe everything is possible. I continue see the positive aspects in everything, even though things usually don’t go the way you want them to.
“The Valley reminds me a little bit of Kate Bush. It’s about the highs and lows that you experience in life, how they can break you, and how you can find the strength in in yourself and in others to overcome the lows. It sounds very serious, but that’s the way I am. And even more so when writing songs.
“Miss Politician is one of my favourite songs. It is most the poppy track on the album, and I think it will surprise a lot of people. It is a tongue-in-cheek story about how everything in life is political. How people deal with each other, how you shouldn’t take all of that too seriously, because then you’ll only get hurt unnecessarily. Of course many of the songs are about love: Don’t You Let Go Of Me, the title says it all really: You have already lost that other person, only you don’t realise it yet. Often the lyrics dig deep, but I can’t sing simple songs about nothing. Because they just don’t mean anything to me.
“The title track The Great Escape is about an impossible love: you both want to be happy together, but that won’t work because of the differences in your personalities. But everyone has his or her own ideas about the meaning of this song. Our video director has shot a script that was based on his own interpretation of these lyrics. And I think that’s great; It’s fantastic if you can experience them in such a way that they have a special meaning for you...”
The Great Escape, it’s a title that lends itself to all kinds of different interpretations. And who knows, it’s very likely that it is about Ilse DeLange herself, who spreads her musical wings on this album to boldly go where she has have never gone before, courageously, even recklessly, by letting her creativity flow without any restrictions. And in so doing, she has come up with the record of a lifetime.

Grote artiesten zijn altijd bijzondere mensen: enorm getalenteerd, anders dan anderen, ambitieus, gezegend met een groot doorzettingsvermogen en een tikkeltje eigenzinnig. Maar alleen de echt allergrootste sterren zijn moedig, op het roekeloze af. Waar het gros van de musici voor de veiligheid van de reeds lang bewandelde paden kiest, durven zij radicaal nieuwe wegen in te slaan. Stilstand is achteruitgang, het talent is te groot om zich in een keurslijf te laten persen, de vleugels worden uitgeslagen.
Ilse DeLange is zo’n ster. Luister naar haar nieuwe album The Great Escape en je staat versteld van de enorme muzikale ontwikkeling die ze sinds haar vorige album Clean Up uit 2003 gemaakt heeft. Als nooit tevoren durft ze zich emotioneel te geven, zonder enige terughoudendheid, in dertien weergaloos mooie songs. Met haar stem kleurt ze ver buiten de lijntjes, vindt ze steeds weer de enige juiste manier om haar gevoelens tot uiting te brengen. In liedjes over haar leven, over de liefde, over de wereld om haar heen, zingt, fluistert, schreeuwt Ilse het desnoods uit om zo de luisteraar te bereiken - rechtstreeks vanuit haar hart.

Ilse DeLange heeft er altijd naar gestreefd het beste uit zichzelf te halen. Daarom nam ze haar debuutalbum World Of Hurt uit 1998 op in het verre Nashville. Ze huurde er de meest gerenommeerde muzikanten van de stad in. En ze liet de plaat produceren door Barry Beckett, een ware legende die eerder albums opnam met o.a. Dylan, Dire Straits en Paul Simon. Nederland viel massaal voor Ilse en World Of Hurt verkocht meer dan een half miljoen exemplaren.
Ook de opvolger Livin’ On Love uit 2000 werd een internationale productie. Ilse reisde naar studio’s in de VS, Canada en Nederland en verdiende er een platina plaat mee.
Clean Up uit 2003 werd opgenomen in de beroemde Capitol B Studio te Los Angeles. Ilse schreef alle nummers zelf, samen met haar producer Bruce Gaitsch en Blue Miller, en ook dit album raakte een gevoelige snaar bij honderdduizenden landgenoten.

Voor The Great Escape wilde Ilse DeLange graag samenwerken met haar favoriete producer Patrick Leonard. “Ik ben dol op Songs From The West Coast van Elton John, die door Patrick is geproduceerd. Een hele zestiger jaren klinkende plaat”, zegt Ilse. “En ik vond Spirit van Jewel ook zo mooi, dat akoestische spreekt me erg aan.”
Toetsenman, componist en songschrijver Leonard werkte samen met grootheden als Roger Waters, Rod Stewart en Madonna (o.a. La Isla Bonita, Who’s That Girl, Like A Prayer en Frozen). “Ik vond de extremen in zijn werk met Madonna zo geweldig. Hij heeft dingen gedaan die heel organisch zijn, puur, akoestisch, klein intiem, maar ook Frozen - daar zit een behoorlijk contrast in. En dat boeide mij.”
Patrick Leonard leek onbenaderbaar. Toch wist Ilse in Los Angeles een afspraak met hem op poten te zetten. “Ik was best wel nerveus, vooral ook omdat Patrick zoiets had van ‘wat moet dat mens van me?’ Maar we hadden gelijk een klik en diezelfde middag hebben we onze eerste gezamenlijke song geschreven, Carry Hope, die ook op de plaat terecht is gekomen.”

Ilse DeLange en Patrick Leonard inspireerden elkaar enorm: “Elke dag dat we samen waren schreven we een liedje, dat ging heel snel. Hij is zo’n virtuoze muzikant, als hij achter de piano ging zitten of geluiden uit z’n effectenapparatuur toverde, inspireerde mij dat onmiddellijk tot het schrijven van melodieën en flarden tekst. Zo duurde het vaak maar een paar uur voor er alweer een liedje geboren was.”
Ilse ontmoette Leonard begin 2004 en ze reisde daarna verschillende malen op en neer naar de States om songs te schrijven. Uiteindelijk kon er gekozen worden uit tientallen liedjes – naast een dertigtal songs die Ilse eerder al met haar vorige producer Bruce Gaitsch geschreven had. Keuze genoeg dus en dat had zijn weerslag op The Great Escape. “De plaat heeft een breed spectrum gekregen, gaat eigenlijk alle kanten op. Ik denk echter dat mijn stem zo’n duidelijk karakter heeft, dat het al die uiteenlopende songs toch met elkaar verbindt tot één samenhangend geheel. Dankzij Patrick gebruik ik mijn stem echter ook zoals ik hiervoor nooit eerder aangedurfd zou hebben. De liedjes vragen er ook om. Je past de manier van zingen aan de liedjes aan, en de manier waarop Patrick schrijft is zo uniek dat het mij uitnodigde om anders dan ik gewend was te zingen. Erg spannend, als zoiets dan lukt is het echt he-le-maal fantastisch!”

Samen liedjes schrijven is samen je ziel bloot leggen – het leidde af en toe tot emotionele taferelen. “We hebben een paar keer zitten janken, ja. Maar dan weet je ook dat je iets echts geraakt hebt. Het overkwam ons op When, het laatste liedje van de plaat, en ook bij Waterfall. Het was voor ons allebei ook een heel bijzondere tijd – zowel in zijn leven als in het mijne gebeurde er van alles. Ik heb toch best wel veel meegemaakt de afgelopen jaren. En je haalt daar iets uit voor jezelf, daar praatte ik dan over met Patrick en dat maakte dan zowel bij mij als bij hem heel veel los. Daarom zijn het allemaal liedjes die gebaseerd zijn op echte gevoelens en verhalen, maar wel op zo’n manier geschreven dat het niet helemaal is dichtgetimmnerd. Wij weten precies waar het over gaat, maar de luisteraar kan er zijn eigen interpretatie aan geven.”
Toch liggen de songs haar zo na aan het hart, dat ze het niet kan laten er een paar uit te lichten: “Reach For The Light is een mooi begin van de plaat, want het gaat over het feit dat ik er nog steeds in geloof, dat ik het positieve blijf zien in alles, ook al loopt het niet altijd zoals jij het wilt. The Valley is een beetje Kate Bush-achtig. Het gaat over hoogte en dieptepunten die je meemaakt, hoe dat je helemaal kan breken, en hoe je in jezelf en bij anderen de kracht kunt vinden om er weer overheen te komen. Het klinkt erg serieus, maar dat ben ik ook best wel. Zeker als ik songs schrijf.”
Miss Politician is één van de opvallendste liedjes. “Het is het meest poppy nummer dat er op staat, met gedubbelde zang en allerlei hippe geluidjes. Ik denk dat het heel veel mensen zal verrassen. Het is een verhaal met een knipoog; het gaat over hoe alles zo politiek is. Hoe mensen met elkaar omgaan, hoe je dat allemaal niet te serieus moet nemen, want dan word je alleen maar nodeloos gekwetst.”
Natuurlijk gaat het ook vaak over de liefde: “Don’t You Let Go Of Me, de titel zegt het al. Eigenlijk ben je die persoon al kwijt, je weet het alleen zelf nog niet. De teksten graven vaak diep, maar ik kan gewoon geen blabla zingen. Want daar kan ik echt helemaal niks mee.”
En de titeltrack The Great Escape gaat over een onmogelijke liefde: “Je wilt allebei heel graag samen zijn, maar dat blijkt onmogelijk door hoe je in elkaar zit. En dat is natuurlijk heel tegenstrijdig. Maar iedereen heeft een eigen idee over dit liedje. Zo heeft de man die onze videoclip erbij gemaakt heeft er een eigen draai aan gegeven. En dat vind ik weer heel erg leuk; het is juist mooi als je er voor jezelf iets uit kunt halen dat voor jou heel belangrijk is.”

The Great Escape, zo’n titel leent zich inderdaad voor allerlei verschillende interpretaties. Maar je hoeft niet te ontsnappen als je alle vrijheid hebt. En dat heeft Ilse DeLange, die op dit album bewijst dat ze niet in een hokje te stoppen is. Ze heeft onbekommerd haar enorme creativiteit de vrije loop gelaten. Moedig, op het roekeloze af. Zoals een groot artiest betaamt. En zo heeft ze de plaat van haar leven gemaakt.
