Jasmin - burst out of the UK scene and dazzled producers and collaborators in the States with her composing chops, her strong, sunny voice, and her worldly adventurousness. I had the chance to talk to her about her new music, her past, taking control of your life, etc... Just figuring out 'who is Jasmin'? Jasmin is a true indie-artist, creating her own videos, writing her own music and even doing some promotion on the side. She is being her own now with a fresh new single "Road To Hell" and an EP to be released in May, 2010.

Jermy Leeuwis (MusicRemedy): I can't find your single I'm Gone on youtube, any specific reason?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yes, that's no longer up anymore. It's old material. I'm currently in the process of putting a new album together, new material and music thats me.
[Q]: ...but history is what makes a person/musician/etc... Don't you want to be reminded or your fans?
Jasmin Tadjiky: True, 100 percent agree. Allthough sometimes it's a little more complicated. New management etc... new direction.
[Q]: Marketing?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Something like that.. I'm trying to put across an image that I'm happy to portray.
[Q]: You are independent but you do have a management?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yea, I have management in the United States. Hoping to get over there this year however I'm completely independent.
[Q]: Is it difficult to have your management in the states?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Of course it can be, however with good communication etc... it doesn't cause any problem.
[Q]: Your management has a lot of Arabian artists. Are you targetting on specific regions or the world?
Jasmin Tadjiky: no anyone, it's global. However my heritage is something that gives me ideas to try and incorporate that side of things into my music at alter date.
[Q]: okido - I saw your name Young London? tell us more...
Jasmin Tadjiky: I no longer go by the name of Young London. It was a name that was previously given to me. It's just Jasmin. Nice and simple.
[Q]: BBC Persia just made a documentary. In what way does your multi-cultural identity influences your music?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Obviously it's my heritage, it's where some of my influences come from. Growing up in my house hold and hearing my dad's collection of Persian artists whilst my mums playing the Beatles in the other room, lol.
[Q]: Is there more then multicultural that sets you apart from ie., recent UK-stars: Amy Winehouse, Katie Melua, Adele?
Jasmin Tadjiky: I guess what I'd have to say that sets me apart from other UK artists, other than my background and influences, would be the fact that I am a one man show. I do everything myself from making my music from scratch to producing my marketing material and making my videos. Because of this I'm intimately connected with my listeners and everything that I do I have a strong classical background and also score and compose classical pieces that definitely have a strong influence on my songs and style of writing (chords/structure etc).
[Q]: So you are doing more and more yourself (ie., Jazzabell Productions), like you said it has advantages but naturally it has dis- aswell. Have you experienced any?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yea, the disadvantages of doing everything yourself and being in the genre of POP music its definetely hard and can be very disheartening when you feel you are only making pigeon steps because of the lack of a machine behind you. It's along process and sometimes things can be tiring, you don't have a budget so its hard to motivate people to do things for free. However the people that support me and believe in me are my team and help me to make these things happen what I am doing is making main stream commercial music without a machine so its very tricky. It's hard to get masses to take notice, creating the hype, getting the initial attention.
[Q]: Do you have an investor, family or a website like sellaband.com?
Jasmin Tadjiky: No, nothing. I am a one man show. I work a part time job. I get people to believe in me to invets their time.
[Q]: So that is what you mean with 'independent artists need all the support they can get'?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yes, it's all about support... if you have support you can make it take off. It's like any product, anything on the market. In the beginning stages of a business you need support right or funding which gains support if the products any good.
[Q]: ok, what about your new album? How is it going?
Jasmin Tadjiky: It's going well. I'm slowly piecing everything together.. What I want is a normal version and then an acoustic unplugged style album. I want the songs to speak for themselves without distractions thats why I think having an acoustic alternative might show that.
[Q]: One like your 'Lost Time' video?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yea exactly.
[Q]: I must say your voice + music sounds great on that track
Jasmin Tadjiky: Thanks.
[Q]: Lately, artists have been releasing albums/singles through the internet (i.e., Radiohead). Will internet be your primary sales-source?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yea, I'm a massive radio head fan, kid A is one of my favs. You know, I like what they've done independently. Oh and yea, I definetly think that releasing music online is the way forward and I plan to release an EP for free once I have created the buzz that I need to generate enough interest for me to be able to do this.
[Q]: Touring might help. US independent artists tour a lot to get attention, so what about touring?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yea that's something I'm working on at present. I'm currently doing a lot of live shows in London and hopefully going to get the attention from the promoters I need. But yea there will be tours to come.
[Q]: So basically, you need to gain more attention to make more stuff happen?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yes, I am struggling with that half of it is being in the right place at the time. I feel confident about what I'm doing, I just need a little bit more attention.
[Q]: Creating a network?
Jasmin Tadjiky: I guess that is a major part of it. Networking your ass of, lol, but networking takes time, relationships take a while to build and I've had major setbacks.
[Q]: Setbacks? You seemed to be on track since Motown was even interested... what happened?
Jasmin Tadjiky: When my father passed away about a year and a half ago, it really hit me. I came back to the United Kingdom and had to pick myself up.
[Q]: Of course, my condoleances.
Jasmin Tadjiky: Thank you. He was ill and I had no idea so it was all a great shock. It's something I won't ever stop dealing with but it keeps me fighting and persevering.
[Q]: Yes, that is really hard and I can only imagine since my parents still live.
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yes it is.
[Q]: You should be proud of yourself. So naturally, with this in mind what is your goal in life and music?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Thank you. My goal in life is to be a succesful singer/songwriter and to put out music that is positive that makes people smile, feel hopeful or trigger the emotions they need. I think that making positive music is important. I think this world has enough bad in it so why put out negative music. You should feel proud about what you do or else it's not worth doing.
[Q]: ok, Jasmin - we are reaching the end so buckle up :-)
Jasmin Tadjiky: haha!
[Q]: Which songs could fans look out for in the future (next couple of months)? Any collaborations?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Ahh now that would be telling :). I'm currently collaborating with a few talented individuals based in the UK however there is some talk with a few producers in the USA who I cant mention at this time! Let's just say I want to simplify what im doing and let my music speak for itself.
[Q]: Ahhh bummer - you are making me curious... Well, when creating a track, do you have a set theme and pre-written lyrics, or do you start with an idea or the music first?
Jasmin Tadjiky: It's different everytime. Sometimes I may have character who ive drawn or created who inspires me to write a song aboutthem. Other times I may write the music first and then start piecing lyrics to it. Songwriting can be quite a process but its always done at my piano thats where it all starts at the piano.
[Q]: Why?
Jasmin Tadjiky: I guess it's where I feel most comfortable. It's like my own private world. It always feels right to start it there.
[Q]: Something that started in your youth?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yes, exactly. It's where I've nurtured what I do. I started out playing the piano at 7 and then writing pieces. It was after I grasped music that songs came into play.
[Q]: What mades you choose people to work with?
Jasmin Tadjiky: I think they have to be passionate about what they do whatever field it is. You know a good friend of mine who directs and filsm my videos is someone I can use as an example. He is passionate about what he does and has a vision. I like people with a clear vision and determination but passion is vital.
[Q]: Do you have a clear vision and determination or do you want to have it?
Jasmin Tadjiky: I definitely have a clear vision and determination. I think that is apparent with my musical journey so far. There has been moments that weren't me but I haven't given up if it didn't work out first time. You pick yourself up and start again!
[Q]: With a clear vision and determination comes a lack of flexibility, how do you incorporate these two in the world of music?
Jasmin Tadjiky: Yeaa, I have hardly any free time. I juggle my music, my family, friends, and believe me, my time is limited. This is a very consuming career. It's not a 9-5 it never ends and you don't get a reward at the end of the day. I also forgot to mention i juggle a part time job too.
[Q]: Ok - a couple of easy ones: what artists are you listening to at the moment?
Jasmin Tadjiky: ooh that's hard, there's a lot. My favourites though: Death Cab For Cutie, Ingrid Michaelson, Troels Abrahamsen, Imogen Heap, Passion Pit and Alicia Keys and Hudson Mohawke. I have a pretty diverse taste.
[Q]: Yeah I say so, hehe - really multi. So recently, what is a typical day like for you?
Jasmin Tadjiky: It can vary however the majority of time I have list of things I need to finish off, It could be handling anything from my web content to sorting out my music video. I also of course set aside time to work on my songs and my music and also music that Im working on for other people. Then of course hanging out with my friends, spending time with my mummy and my boyfriend.
[Q]: Any final words?
Jasmin Tadjiky: yea, I think what I'd like to come from this interview is to give other young people who have a dream/passion encouragement to carry on persevering and they will get the recognition that they deserve! eventually :0
[Q]: Ok - well thank you for your time
Jasmin Tadjiky: Your welcome :)
Wow, you definitely should know who Jasmin is by now. So, please remember to check out her official Jasmin website or her Jasmin twitter-page.
