John Mellencamp will do a month-long tour this summer. His new album, "Life, Death, Love & Freedom" will be released on July 15th, and to promote it, John kicks off the tour on July 8th at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia.
He'll stay out on the road through an August 2nd gig at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California. Lucinda Williams will open for John at all the shows.
As for the sound of Life, Death, Love and Freedom, Mellencamp's longtime guitarist, Mike Wanchic, told Billboard.com that it's "very, very, very organic-upright basses, cocktail (drum) kits, lots of acoustic guitars, really very atmospheric, absolutely one of the coolest sounding records that I've heard, of ours or anybody else's."
If that's not enough to appease Mellencamp fans, Billboard also revealed this tidbit: Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a musical by Mellencamp and scriptwriter Stephen King, is finally opening in April 2009 at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre.
extra information
John Mellencamp's new album will be released through Hear Music, the record label formerly run by Starbucks. "Life, Death, Love & Freedom" was produced by T-Bone Burnett who came up with a new higher-definition audio format called Code.
The technology reportedly turns out audio files that are so good you won't be able to tell them apart from the original masters. But, since the playback is still kinda iffy, the album will be released as a 2-disc set with a standard CD and a DVD fea turing the new Code files.
