Jude Johnstone 'Mr Sun' album

“Mr. Sun” continues with the jazzy/blues musical rhythms found in her last project “Blue Light,” while maintaining her trademarks of emotional depth, passionate vocals and haunting melodies. Johnstone’s level of artistry continues to grow with “Mr. Sun.”

There is an intelligence and sophistication to Jude Johnstone’s music that makes her stand out. Nowhere are these attributes more evident than on Johnstone’s fourth CD “Mr. Sun,” from BoJak Records. “Mr. Sun” continues with the jazzy/blues musical rhythms found in her last project “Blue Light,” while maintaining her trademarks of emotional depth, passionate vocals and haunting melodies. Johnstone’s level of artistry continues to grow with “Mr. Sun.”

In the creative atmosphere of Mad Dog Studios in Burbank, CA, while recording “Blue Light,” Johnstone’s inspiration intensified creating a flood of new songs, which became “Mr. Sun.” The chemistry of working with these compelling musicians motivated Johnstone to record the new songs immediately. Musicians David Piltch (upright bass), Danny Frankel (drums, percussions), Freddy Koella (guitar), and Marc Macisso (sax) who worked on “Blue Light,” remained for the recording of “Mr. Sun.” In addition, premier musicians Dean Parks, Mark Goldenberg (Guitar), Jon Ossman (upright bass), Daniel Savant (muted trumpet, flugelhorn) and background vocals by Stephen Bishop and Maxayn Lewis topped off a select group of performers that contributed to these recordings. Johnstone was the producer, played keyboards, chimes and wrote all the songs.

The piano in the parlor of her parent's house in coastal Maine was hers as soon as she could reach its keys. On its bench, alongside her church-soprano mother, she learned the magic of harmony. In that same room, her older brother's records played Stones, Creedence, Beatles and in the evenings, her school-teacher father's collection of Glenn Miller and Sarah Vaughn. It was, Jude Johnstone recalls, ...all the education I thought Id ever need. But shed get more: writing songs by age ten, playing clubs while still in school, she surprised no one when, at nineteen, she headed west to continue her training in the studios and nightclubs of LA, where she soon found herself collaborating with many of that city's top producers (Henry Lewy, T-Bone Burnett) and musicians. Johnstone began focusing on her songwriting, setting off a string of covers by such artists as Stevie Nicks (Cry Wolf), Emmylou Harris (Hold On), Bonnie Raitt (Wounded Heart), Jennifer Warnes (The Nightingale), Bette Midler (The Girl is On To You), Trisha Yearwood (Hearts in Armor), and Johnny Cash (including the title cut of the latter’s Grammy-winning album "Unchained"). Johnstone also wrote the number 1 song, "The Women Before Me,” featured on Trisha Yearwood’s debut CD, which was recognized with a BMI Songwriters Award. Johnstone's critically acclaimed debut CD "Coming Of Age" (released in 2002 on independent label BoJak Records) was featured on NPR's Morning Edition and reached number 6 on Amazon's Best Seller's List. "Coming of Age" includes the songs "Wounded Heart" and "The Nightingale," which were featured in Lifetime Network's television hit series "Army Wives." Bonnie Raitt covered "Wounded Heart," on her CD "Silver Lining," released in 2002. Johnstone's sophomore CD "On a Good Day," released in 2005, attracted guest vocal appearances by Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell, Julie Miller, and Bonnie Raitt. "On a Good Day" generated impressive media buzz leading to Johnstone's national television debut where she performed the title track on CBS's "The Early Show." "On a Good Day," includes the song "In This House," featured in Lifetime Network's television's hit series "Army Wives." "Blue Light" her third CD is jazz/blues flavored project that possesses the sensitive, soulful and poetic qualities found in her previous discs and returns Johnstone to the musical influences of Sarah Vaughn and Billie Holiday. Johnstone's newest CD "Mr. Sun" continues with the jazzy/blues musical rhythms found in her last project “Blue Light,” while maintaining her trademarks of emotional depth, passionate vocals and haunting melodies.
