“Suffocate Me” is the first track from the brand new London-based act LECAIN. With all the trademarks of their now recognizable and highly individual droning guitars and vocals in a post-rock alternative indie formation; LECAIN’s “Suffocate Me” is not only a hallmark of a great indie pop song but recognition that this 10-week old band are indeed more special than most. With hints of Muse, Radiohead, Interpol, The Strokes, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Cure, LECAIN’s debut completely symbolizes what the act is about. Dark and catchy with hooks and turns, a completely original vocal style, and a delivery that most older bands would die for. “Suffocate Me” is a song about existence. An intolerance to the mundane and a sharp tongue to those that fail to recognize a world beyond their doorstep. The single also features two remixes for club/dance environments and is backed up with a music video produced by Swedish model-turned-photographer, Lina Scheynius.
LECAIN is a band that has its foundations laid in Stockholm, Sweden. It was there in his small apartment that Gérard Sébastiän Kristian LeCain wrote his album across winter months and icy extremes at the start of 2006. He then set sail to London to deliver his word to a wider audience; and in doing-so created the band LECAIN, together with close friend Yannis Kontos by his side, and defined what is now the LECAIN sound. The rest of the band are brought in to naturally complement Gérard and Yannis’ creation where necessary which has proved to be a big winner of hearts and minds to those with serious and credible musical tastes.
Live the band simply shine. Their passion for their music clearly shows and was proven when their very first public show (4-weeks after forming) sold out Barfly’s central London venue completely. The crowd were simply in awe and the band are planning several shows around the time of release. The first being on Friday 17th November 2006 where they have been asked to be main support for 50Hz.
Biography
LECAIN are a band that concentrate on being exceptionally good at writing, arranging, structuring songs to create cool dynamics within their songs. In May 2006, Gérard Sébastiän Kristian LeCain (the band’s songwriter/vocalist/guitarist – from London originally) decided to move from Sweden to London, encouraged to be seen by a wider audience.
The band he formed have concentrated on creating a rock-monotone edge with droning vocals (a style that has now won them much praise as being genuinely original and innovative talents).
This is where the strength in a LECAIN song lies. The tracks simply shine. Gérard’s voice is so original, it hurts. Yannis Kontos’ guitar style rips through the chest like a Sonic Youth epic. Baz Bang’s bassline struts the length of the songs like a hooker in an Amsterdam window. Seducing the ears with each note, and Vicky Smith using every nuance in the smallest of drumkits to drive each and every LECAIN track like a stake through your heart. This is an alternative-commercial format act with an intelligent twist. Names such as Radiohead, Muse, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Interpol, The Strokes and The Cure have been thrown around – the list of what LECAIN might sound like – and it keeps growing. Every act a name that would do any new band proud to be associated with.
Yannis (Guitar) was first in line to join the band. His evident axemanship was never going to escape Gérard and their 7 year-long friendship. Vicky Smith came to the band via LECAIN’s friends Havana Guns, who were on a sabbatical. She therefore came to LECAIN with an alarming edge of realism (and 10 years formally trained drumming experience to boot). Baz Bang (Barry Adam Ng – BANG) was the final piece in this puzzle and fitted the slot perfectly with a realisation that he’d finally found his band. He’d impressed the rest of the band by already knowing half the album before he had met them, and walked into the audition knowing his bass was doing the talking.
LECAIN are now preparing for support slots on various shows all over. Dates will be posted on their website and MySpace page.
