In December 1978, Marvin Gaye released Here, My Dear, a sprawling two-LP set that was a deeply personal chronicle of his divorce from Anna Gordy. Though at the time it received mixed reviews, the album has since become recognized as a highly influential masterpiece of romantic anguish. Both Rolling Stone and Mojo magazines recently named it one of the best albums of all time.
On the eve of the album’s 30th anniversary, Hip-OSelect.com announces a 2-CD Expanded Edition, releasing January 15, 2008. Included in Here, My Dear: Expanded Edition are the remastered original album, plus a complete alternate version of it featuring demo vocals and newly discovered instrumentation. For this unique project, the alternate version was created by a group of select artists and producers, who were asked not to overdub anything but to work only with the original multi-track session reels.
These gentlemen—Marvin peers and protégés from Leon Ware to Salaam Remi—delivered a breathtaking new vision of what Marvin put on tape. Their mixes illuminate the sketchbooks that produced a masterpiece.
A bonus track rounds out each disc: “Ain’t It Funny (How Things Turn Around),” a posthumously released track now in undubbed form for the first time, on disc 1; and the rare, original 12-inch instrumental version of “A Funky Space Reincarnation” on disc 2. The vocal version was recently featured ina hot international Dior perfume ad with Charlize Theron.
This extraordinary collection is housed in a deluxe digi-pak with a 28-page booklet, packed with memorabilia, full lyrics, an essay by Gaye biographer David Ritz, and sidebar essays on the controversial cover and the creation of this edition. In true Hip-oSelect.com style, also included are detailed recording annotations for the first time.
