Reggae rapper Matisyahu is gearing up for another run of North American shows this fall/winter in support of new EP, "Shattered," release date October 21st via Epic. A full-length album, "Light," will follow in early 2009.
The performer is scheduled to roll out a 38-city tour that stops by clubs and theaters across the US as well as Toronto and Montreal through mid-December. A variety of support acts, including Flobots, Chester French, Heavy Pets, Future Rock and K'naan will join in on the trek, which kicked off October 18th in Milwaukee, WI.
"Shattered" sports four songs that will also appear on "Light": "Two Child One Drop," "I Will Be Light," "Smash Lies" and "So Hi So Lo." Matisyahu plans to treat audiences to listening parties after each show on the upcoming tour, during which he'll guide them through the songs from "Light."
"Shattered" was produced by David Kahne and recorded at studios in Jamaica, New York and Virginia. Legendary duo Sly & Robbie and Fishbone's Norwood Fisher make guest appearances on the album.
Matisyahu became a quick sensation in 2005 with the album "Live at Stubbs," and its follow-up, 2006's "Youth." Matisyahu's 2006 EP/DVD combo "No Place To Be," topped reggae album charts. The CD comprises seven tracks, including "Jerusalem (Out of Darkness Comes Light)" and a version of the Police classic "Message In A Bottle." The set's "Live in Israel" DVD features a 2005 performance shot in Tel Aviv as well as interviews and street performances from Jerusalem.
"Last year I spent an extensive period of time working to "develop the content and the idea" of "Light," which is a lot different than I've done it before. Before, I've just kind of listened to some music and let my free association kind of take over and just write whatever is on my mind," says Matisyahu.
Matisyahu, who is constantly lauded for his energetic live performance, fuses Orthodox Judaism, classic reggae and hip-hop to get across his message of peace and unity. The Grammy-nominated artist considers his music career a revolutionary way to channel his spiritual calling.
