On this bittersweet pop song Oh, Atoms - Gwen and Marc, two multi-instrumentalists who share a musical past as varied as their music is sweet - use their delicate vocals and pitch perfect folk pop style to take the listener back to the early days of long endless summers with sunny days, fluffy clouds and a bag of lemon sherbets in hand...
The first song ever written by Oh, Atoms, ‘Sugar Mouse’ was created in one day in a Hackney attic using sweets and confectionery as a theme whilst resisting the usual clichés and using instruments you may not expect to hear. The dark intense grandeur of the violin intro leads into the deliciously jaunty banjo that carries this beautiful ode to the sugary delights that is it was destined for.
‘Sugar Mouse’ features in the new Brit film ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’ which stars Alan Davies, is directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) and is in cinemas from July 25th.
Described as “a candlelit evening in a dusty attic with a Victorian spectre and a drunken bee” Gwen Cheeseman and Marc Withecomb met in Austin, USA – she was on tour with Psapp (playing violin and toys) and Jose Gonzalez, he was enjoying a troubadour lifestyle aboard the Greyhound.
Fast forward twelve months and much has come of that fateful meeting. Armed with a chestful of songs, written together in close collaboration and taking inspiration from 1930s tea dances, Victorian darkness, dead film stars, suspicious circumstances and selected confectionery, their music caught the ear of the folk at Sony/ATV who swiftly signed them to a global publishing deal in May of this year.
Having already enjoyed a run of live dates, including a residency at Betsy Trotwood, Oh, Atoms are now releasing their debut single ‘Sugar Mouse’. The single will be accompanied by a part animated video directed by Matt Bowron the winner of the Doritos ‘You Make It We Play It’ make your own TV advert competition. To celebrate the release of the film, ‘Sugar Mouse’ will be available as a free download via www.myspace.com/ohatoms from 25th July for a two week period prior to its commercial release.
