In today’s hectic world, it’s often hard to remember to make time to have fun and unwind. Many of us would love to turn to an album that forces us to have a good time, encourages us to laugh our worries away, and makes us groove to the beat. One Block Radius’ energetic, lighthearted brand of humorous and insightful hip-hop does just that. Think of something along the lines of Jamiroquai meets Jurassic 5, and you’ll be that much closer to understanding One Block Radius’ vibe.
The group consists of writer, producer, and singer Marty James and DJ MDA formerly of Scapegoat Wax, along with emcee Z-Man of Hiero Imperium. One Block Radius has created an exciting new musical movement on their debut LP, Long Story Short, released on Avatar Records and distributed in the US by Fontana/Universal. Offering up a unique blend of creative beats that push the boundaries of hip-hop, while taking listeners on “day in the life of” type lyrical journeys, One Block Radius succeeds at creating their own distinctive musical niche.
For evidence, check “Wake Up Tomorrow”, the trio’s funny take on getting too drunk for your own good; “Black Mercedes,” a surprisingly charming tale of an unfaithful girl that includes a nod to R&B singer Oran “Juice” Jones; and “I Like Him,” where Z-Man recounts a surprising encounter at a recording session with actor singer Jennifer Love Hewitt. These cuts display the group’s winning comedic charm and imaginative songwriting, which know no limits. “We’re not trying to fit a mold,” MDA says. “We’re not trying to look at certain groups and try to copy. We’re just ourselves”. It is this keen sense of individuality that brought One Block Radius to their new home of Avatar Records.
After previously being signed to major labels with Scapegoat Wax, Marty knew that it was important to be amidst people that supported artistic freedom. The experiences on the major labels were beneficial introductions into the music business, but ultimately were not totally fulfilling. As a founding member of Scapegoat Wax, Marty felt that the labels tried to steer the group in a direction not in tune with his original vision. He also stated that One Block Radius’ music “makes more sense on an indy [label]”.
Upon the dissolution of Scapegoat Wax, Marty and MDA wanted to create a three-man group that was reminiscent of the initial intent of their style of music. They knew
Z-Man of the Hieroglyphics camp, and had always wanted to work with him. From there, the trio formed One Block Radius and have been doing their thing together for the past year and a half. Drawing from their collectively diverse musical tastes, they want the world to recognize that they are coming fresh and original.
Although the road to this point in their careers has had its moments of uncertainty, it has been one filled with important life lessons. These experiences enable Marty, MDA, and Z-Man to create something special for their fans. Combining cool melodies and clever rhymes, Long Story Short is guaranteed to please.
