Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has premiered the first single from his new solo album Cradlesong, which hits store shelves on June 30th. The new single is titled "Her Diamonds," and is streaming live here at MusicRemedy.

Thomas has also lent another song from Cradlesong, titled "Give Me The Meltdown," to the NBA for use in promoting its 2009 playoff season. The song can be heard in promo spots airing on ABC and ESPN.

Thomas is also busy preparing for a North American tour slated to begin in the fall, with confirmed dates expected to be announced in a few weeks. Fans can catch a preview of Thomas in concert with his scheduled performance on NBC's Today show summer concert series on July 3rd.

Thomas' new solo album will bear the rhythmic influence of his collaborations with several South American and African percussionists.

"We started off with the idea of doing a newer version of [Paul Simon's The] Rhythm of the Saints," says Thomas. "And that kinda carried us a long way through. It gave us a whole new bed to work with, like 'How do I get my pop sensibility around this and work it into that?' It was a lot of fun."

    Rob Thomas biography
Emblem/Atlantic recording artist Rob Thomas has announced the forthcoming release of his second solo album, titled “CRADLESONG.” Due on June 30th, the album features the first single, “Her Diamonds,” which will hit radio and video outlets in mid-April. Once again produced by Matt Serletic, “CRADLESONG” is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Thomas’ 2005 solo debut – the #1, RIAA platinum “…SOMETHING TO BE.”

“I like musical hybrids,” says Thomas about the musical direction of the new album. “Like, 'What would it sound like if we took Prince's drummer and mixed him with really amazing Nashville players?’ I like to take everyone just left of their comfort zone and record it."

In other Rob Thomas news, he has been announced as a keynote speaker at the Billboard Mobile Entertainment Live! conference to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on March 31st.

“…SOMETHING TO BE” made chart history upon its release in April 2005. The collection entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #1, marking the first time that a male artist from a rock or pop group had debuted at #1 with their first solo album since Billboard introduced the chart 50 years earlier. The album – which earned Thomas a pair of Grammy nominations – included a string of hit singles, including the #1 global smash, “Lonely No More,” “This Is How A Heart Breaks,” “Ever The Same,” and “Streetcorner Symphony.”

Alongside the #1 U.S. success of “…SOMETHING TO BE,” Thomas topped charts in 15 countries, among them Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. He supported the release of “…SOMETHING TO BE” with a major, sold-out world tour during 2005 and 2006. Thomas also appeared at the historic Live 8 multi-concert event in July 2005, performing both as a solo artist and joining Stevie Wonder for a duet version of the Wonder classic “Higher Ground.”

In 2007, Thomas reunited with his bandmates in Matchbox Twenty for the release of “EXILE ON MAINSTREAM.” The group’s first album in five years, the set combined a retrospective of their greatest hits with a six-track EP of new songs produced by Steve Lillywhite – including the RIAA gold single, “How Far We’ve Come.” Debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200, the RIAA gold “EXILE ON MAINSTREAM” scored the biggest first week of the year for a greatest hits collection.

Thomas scored another solo hit in 2007 with “Little Wonders,” from the soundtrack to the Disney animated feature, Meet The Robinsons. In December 2008, Thomas performed at the 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington DC, where he paid tribute to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey with an emotionally charged rendition of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” featuring a choir of 150 New York City policemen and firefighters.

One of the most distinctive vocalists and accomplished songwriters in contemporary music, Thomas has earned a string of accolades – both for his work as lead singer and primary composer with Matchbox Twenty as well as for his solo work and collaborations with other artists. In 2004, the Songwriters Hall of Fame presented Thomas with its premiere “Starlight Award” – created to recognize a songwriter in the early years of his or her career who has already made a lasting impact. He has won numerous BMI and ASCAP Awards, and has earned the Songwriter of the Year crown from both Billboard and BMI.

Thomas has written and performed a remarkable string of hits, including Matchbox Twenty’s #1-charting “Push,” “3AM,” “If You’re Gone,” “Bent,” “Disease,” and “Unwell,” plus such favorites as “Real World,” “Back 2 Good,” “Mad Season,” and “Bright Lights.” His smash collaboration with Santana, the Thomas-penned “Smooth,” earned Rob three Grammy Awards and ranks #1 on Billboard’s “Top Hot 100 Rock Songs” chart and #2 on the magazine’s “Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs.” He has also worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Marc Anthony, and Bernie Taupin. Combining all of his projects, Thomas has contributed to sales of some 80 million records.
