Is it inevitable that a magazine photographer shooting a girl band will automatically ask them to show some skin? Maybe most girl bands will comply. But when that band is ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, electro-rock mavericks DEE PLUME (guitar and vocals) and SUE DENIM (bass and vocals) who have a well-deserved reputation for what they put on and not how much they’re willing to take off, what’s the betting that the guy went back to his editor with a flea in his ear and a resolution to do his homework next time?
You gotta laugh - and these girls do! On the eve of launching their new single, the Robots have a style of their own and make it all seem so effortless. And yet, it hasn’t been a smooth ride all the way…
WE’RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ, the second single off their 3rd album, is a joyfully rambunctious romp through the band’s true-life (mis)adventures in Popland ?— a tongue-in-cheek celebration of all that’s happened to these DIY musical minxes on the way from disastrously door-stepping the NME at Reading Festival to flying to a gig on LA’s Hollywood Boulevard only to find no PA has been booked. Anyone thinking of starting a band should listen to this!
And while ROBOTS IN DISGUISE couldn’t be more serious about their music, let’s just say they’ve become inured to the craziness of everything that surrounds it. And what’s more, they’re happy to send it up at their own expense.
‘Call us subversive but we love to do things our way,’ says agent provocateuse, Dee. It’s a way that’s already earned ROBOTS IN DISGUISE cult success in France and Germany where they’ve toured extensively around their first two albums, but now they’re setting their sights closer to home, supporting The Gossip on tour this summer and picking up fans from the likes of The Klaxons, Peaches, Princess Superstar and CSS.
This catchy, fast-paced guitar thrash was produced in Berlin by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps/ I Am X) and is available to download & buy since 7 January 08.
‘We just thought we’d have some fun,’ says Sue. ‘We’re wise to the ways of the business now, but some of the things that happen are so mental, you wouldn’t believe!’ Dee agrees: ‘Like we say in the song, “If you want to start a band listen to this”.’ Indeed...
biography
ROBOTS IN DISGUISE are fronted by DEE PLUME (guitar and vocals) and SUE DENIM (bass and vocals). Part riot grrl princesses, part monsters of DIY musical mayhem, this maverick electro-indie-rock-dance duo has a reputation for fashion-forward style and energetic shows where Dee's guitar and Sue's grooving bass lines dance over chunky electronic beats and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics.
The Robots first met at a Le Tigre gig and quickly discovered a shared love of girl punk bands and so started writing music together.
Snapped up by French label, Recall, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE released their eponymous debut album in 2004, creating a real buzz throughout Europe after which they took their crazed live show on tour. Their dancefloor killer 12” single, BOYS, was released with remixes by Hidden Agenda, SIN, The Servant and Tommy Hools and won over a host of fans including Boy George and Peaches.
After a US release and tour in 2005, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE released GET RID!, their sharp, snazzy electrofunk album on Recall in France, Anorak Supersport in Benelux countries and Australia’s Shock Records. Their standout single, DJ’s GOT A GUN, enjoyed heavy rotation across Europe and the States. GET RID! was then released by President Records in the UK last year, with its single, TURN IT UP, featured on US hit show, Ugly Betty.
Robots in Disguise have graced the pages of numerous fashion magazines donning their discopunk mod look and have also acted in BBC2's The Mighty Boosh as evil alter egos, The Electro Girls and The Goth Girls.
This autumn sees ROBOTS IN DISGUISE releasing their 3rd album, WE’RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ, produced by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps/ I Am X) in Berlin. Sharp, dancey, tongue-in-cheek and frequently impossibly catchy, WE’RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ includes the hit single, THE SEX HAS MADE ME STUPID, a hedonistic, future indie-dance classic of what happens when you get off with someone you like. The sex, the drink, the illegal substances – the sheer addictive mess and mayhem that inevitably ensue from acting on attraction.
The title track is a is a joyfully rambunctious romp through the band’s true-life (mis)adventures in Popland – a tongue-in-cheek celebration of all that’s happened to these DIY musical minxes on the way from disastrously door-stepping the NME at Reading Festival to flying to a gig on LA’s Hollywood Boulevard only to find no PA has been booked.
