After one listen to Battery/Jive recording artist, Sir Will a.k.a. Willie Hendrixx's brand of Hip Hop, a few words come to mind: electrifying, innovative, charismatic. But there's one word in particular that sums up both his style and reason for being: daring.
"One day my brother dared me to get into Hip Hop," remembers Will, who at the time was writing poetry. "He said 'I bet you can't rap.' I was just playing around and I spit a hot 16. It's been on from there."
Born and raised in the Decatur/Stone Mountain area east of Atlanta, Sir Will always had music in his spirit. The son of a singer, Will grew up in a structured household where both of his parents were church pastors. Naturally, he'd get into Gospel music and began playing drums at just 5 years old. But when he was introduced to Hip Hop at the age of 12, rap verses replaced bible verses as his favorite thing to recite. Enthralled by the genres uncensored expression and artists such as Nelly and Outkast, Sir Will set his sights on a rap career at the ripe age of 18, an age where many adolescents are just finally learning who they are.
"I was trying to be someone I wasn't," admits Will, a former high school honor roll student, who wound up joining a local 10-man rap group whose music predominately featured lyrics about guns and drugs. "I could spit, but I didn't know what to rap about."
Internal struggles within the group, and himself, nearly led Will to quit rapping completely. Surprisingly, it was Will's strict, bible-thumping mother encouraged him to stick to his newfound love. Coupling that with being exposed to envelope-pushing artists like Pharrell and Kanye West, Sir Will developed a new found interest, and style, in music.
His first solo mixtape, Back From the Future, captured his new creative energy. Incorporating elements he loved about D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest and KRS-ONE, Sir Will re-introduced himself to audiences as an artist who is too well-rounded to be boxed in.
Garnering influence from high-energy performers such as T.I. and Busta Rhymes, Sir Will has graced stages for the NAACP and BET on top of winning Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9's coveted Best of the Best monthly competition four times in eleven months.
Now gearing up for his Battery/Jive debut, Sir Will is poised to let the rest of the world know what his life sounds like, especially the ladies. His first single "Hot n Tot" featuring Princess (formerly of Crime Mob), makes reference to former enslaved performer Venus Hottentot, offering a light-hearted twist that aims to help curvaceous females appreciate their unique appearance. Songs like "Cruise Control" use slick metaphors and an airy dance track to express sensuality sans vulgarity while the up tempo "It's the Life" has Sir Will showing a more vulnerable side rapping about losing love to the limelight.
Describing his music as "futuristic," Sir Will is actually a throwback artist that reminds us of what it sounds like to hear raw energy on a track. Blending Hip Hop, 80's rock and Neo Soul into a sound that fits him perfectly, Will has gone from being dared to rap, to daring listeners to listen.
BMG Label Group half of the SonyBMG behemoth, is putting a firm foot forward in the urban music marketing with the creation of a new incubator imprint called Battery Records, headed by industry veteran Neil Levine. Intended to grow and develop young urban talent, in an age where such development is sorely lacking, Battery Records marks SonyBMG's unswerving dedication to music quality and breadth across all genres.
Battery Records shares New York offices with SonyBMG's RED Marketing Group. An independent arm, RED is known best for powerhouse pop and rock acts. The synergy between RED and Battery Records gives SonyBMG a unique and enviable position in the urban sphere, allowing Levine and his staff to move within SonyBMG's ranks for talent.
Battery Records will be given a leg up on the competition by searching within the SonyBMG family for talent. Already up to bat for the new label are artists hailing from the "the dirty south", Sunny Valentine, Lil' Goonie and Sir Will signed to Jive/ Zomba. Leading out of 2008 and into the future, Battery Records is here to energize the music industry!
