“Hail the king of rock ‘n’ soul,” proclaims the headline of a recent Los Angeles Times article. And with that, the Solomon Burke renaissance is on! Hot off his first Grammy® for Best Contemporary Blues Album with 2002’s Don’t Give Up On Me, Solomon Burke is back with a new album called Make Do With What You Got, available from Shout! Factory on March 1st!!!
If Don’t Give Up On Me represents a quieter side of Burke, Make Do With What You Got springs open the vocal flood-gates. Nearly 40 years after the Rolling Stones covered Burke’s “Cry To Me” and “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” Burke returns the favor, leaving his indelible imprint on the Stones’ “I Got The Blues.” Make Do With What You Got also features Burke’s spiritually passionate interpretations of Hank Williams’ mournfully solemn warning “Wealth Won’t Save Your Soul,” Bob Dylan’s “What Good Am I,” Robbie Robertson’s (The Band) “It Makes No Difference” and Dr. John’s “Make Do With What You Got” (written specifically for Burke and hand-delivered).
Best known for his years with Atlantic Records in the 1960s – creating a string of classic numbers including “Cry To Me,” “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” and “Down In The Valley,” which defined the soul music idiom with architectural precision – Solomon Burke has influenced everyone from Otis Redding to Tom Jones. Make Do With What You Got further cements Burke’s legacy as the King of Rock & Soul.
