Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

Steven Wilson, the founder and lead songwriter of Grammy-nominated band Porcupine Tree, will release the first album under his own name, ‘Insurgentes’ (K-Scope) on February 24. Comprising 10 new tracks that range from ballads and anthems to all-out industrial noise assaults, the dark, cinematic, and richly textured disc represents 2 years’ worth of creative output and numerous recording sessions worldwide in studios from Mexico City to Japan to Israel.

While Wilson is a member of several bands, including Blackfield, No-Man, and Bass Communion, he explains that “when I began writing these songs, I quickly realized that they would be best suited to an album under my own name. It was an intuitive, almost unconscious writing process that resulted in a kind of ‘poetry of melancholy.'” The final product inhabits a similar experimental realm as recent albums by Thom Yorke, Portishead, and Nine Inch Nails.

Wilson recruited a stellar cast of guests to work on the album including bassist Tony Levin, drummer Gavin Harrison, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess, alongside Japanese Koto player Michiyo Yagi, British guitarist Sand Snowman, and jazz flautist and saxophonist Theo Travis.

Continuing Wilson’s track record of unique packaging and ultra high-quality recordings, a limited run of copies of ‘Insurgentes’ was released this year in two $100 deluxe versions:

*A 3000-copy run of 2 CDs (the album plus a bonus disc) and a DVD-A containing the 5.1 surround mix of the album.

*A 1000-copy run on 4 x 10-inch vinyl discs.

Both are accompanied by a 120-page book of photographs taken by Lasse Hoile and Susana Moyaho during the recording of the album.
