Hip Hop has finally given birth to Its savior on the same corner that Hip Hop started from, Hip Hop gave birth to the Sun of New York: SunN.Y.
SunN.Y., 23, is not only the new cornerstone of Hip Hop, but he is also the cornerstone for Virgin Records. Jermaine Dupri, President of the Virgin Urban Division, explains, "SunN.Y. is one of the reasons that Virgin will win and be taken seriously as a rap label".
Why does Jermaine Dupri and everyone in the Hip Hop industry feel so confidently about this particular artist? Perhaps it is because SunN.Y. provides the beacon of light to a genre that was becoming very gloomy and dark, with no real purpose besides creating lyrics for profit. SunN.Y. is one of the last rappers who is a rapper because that’s all he knows, that’s all he lives-Hip Hop.
As commercial Hip Hop has clogged the pipes of real artistic story telling, consumers were growing more and more disenchanted and whispers were circulating ‘what happened to real Hip Hop?’ It is no wonder that SunN.Y is regarded as a breath of fresh air. SunN.Y. has the lyrical skills to paint vivid pictures as if you are reading his own personal diary. There are no gimmicks, there are no campaigns, there is just truth. He just shares his truth. And wasn’t that Hip Hop in the first place? Doug E. Fresh, Eric B. & Rakim, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Run D.M.C., Grand Master Flash, and Slick Rick - SunN.Y. has all of these elements but provides his modern touch, swift punch lines that knocks his contenders completely out in any lyrical battle.
Hip Hop having its roots based in freestyling otherwise known as "battling" on the corner, calling other artists out has found a modern home now: BET 106 & Park’s "Free Style Fridays." SunN.Y stepped on the modern corner, as he stepped on stage. Not only did he win the “106 & Park” freestyle competition for himself, he won it for Hip Hop, seven times in a row. SunN.Y. is already popular with 64 million viewers of “106 & Park”, and Atlanta’s four million Hot 107.9 listeners because he has a compelling ability to capture every audience with his lyrical strength and talent. Any artist that masters freestyling, as he has, undeniably has an uncanny ability to think strategically and execute lyrical bombs within seconds notice. This not only reveals that he is a battle rapper, but that he can actually make hot songs. SunN.Y. reveals, "I don’t back down to nobody lyrically. Plus I got a beautiful track record of not losing." And he certainly doesn’t lose in his debut album, OVERNIGHT CELEBRITY. His popularity and celebrity status doesn’t compromise his connection to the raw essence of the streets. Rochester, having a worse per capita crime rate than New York City, has forced SunN.Y. into the darkest reality allowing him to create the most vivid lyrics describing the Soul of a Hustler. Whether one is a Hustler or not, everyone can relate to his story. He connects you to his place in Rochester, whether you are in a suburban, rural, or city area, you know the Life of a Hustler.
SunN.Y. doesn’t try to sell you a story. He is that story. Just as Hip Hop originally was, SunN.Y. currently is. He connects you to Hip Hop, no matter where you are…it’s the same corner. It’s that connection that Hip Hop started from. Who would've thought that mainstream media would've embraced the very raw essence of freestyling on the same corner of KRS1, same corner of NAS, TUPAC, BIGGIE, JAY Z, RUN DMC and allow it to be televised on BET “106 & Park”? Who would've imagined that freestyling on a corner would make you an OVERNIGHT CELEBRITY. My how Hip Hop has changed, but SunN.Y. still remains the same.
