Tabla artist, composer, and producer, Suphala, is a protégé of the great tabla masters Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. She has collaborated with Sean Lennon, Edie Brickell, Norah Jones, Perry Ferrell (Jane’s Addiction), hip- hop producer Timbaland, Lady Ms. Kier (Dee-Lite), 4Hero, Vernon Reid (Living Colour), and Yoko Ono.

    Suphala

In January 2005, Suphala was the first female and first artist to perform in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.

An Indian born and raised in America, Suphala travels to India every year to explore new depths of tabla and Indian sound. She is well versed in Indian and Western Classical music having studied piano since the age of four. Suphala’s compositions are described as sensual, high-brow, cinematic, high-tech, authentic, and mood-altering. Her album entitled, "The Now," is out on Rasamusic/Tommy Boy records.

In concert, Suphala takes us on a sonic journey with her driving tabla beats laid over a digital landscape with orchestral sounds including violin, cello, trombone, and occasional vocals.

    Praise
The tone she produces ricochets off the wall like so many shot pellets. One sits there hypnotized, nay even paralyzed, by the fecundity of her musical thought.
—Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s drummer and tabla student of Suphala)

Suphala is as dynamic as she is beautiful and as talented as she is dedicated. Extraordinary!
    —Vernon Reid (Living Colour)

She appears at first to be a delicate flower, but once her mesmerizing hands begin to beat those drums she becomes a steady venus groove trap.
    —Lady Ms. Kier (Dee-Lite)

I find this record to be very sensual...the shape, the texture...gets me turned on, quite a bit, actually. After I heard this record for the first time, it pissed me off that I didn’t get to play on it, it’s pretty awesome...
—Michael Bland (drummer for Prince & the NPG)

It is not often that you meet someone as beautiful inside and out as Suphala. It is less often that you meet them sitting next to Salman Rushdie. But it is even less often that they turn out to be Zakir Hussain’s tabla student, and willingly to share their musical genius with you at a recording studio three days later. Despite the infinitesimal chances of this happening, it did, and I think of it as nothing short of a miracle. Ladies and gentlemen...Suphala!
    —Sean Lennon

    A radical revolutionary.
    —Harper Simon

    The next big thing!
    — Salman Rushdie
