Taxi Taxi is the brainchild of musician and producer Terence Bernardo. The band met in a taxi carpool during the New York City transit strike of 2005. During the fateful ride through the morning rush hour they discovered a shared affinity for the music of Stax Records and artists such as ESG, Harry Nillson and Big Star. Within a month, the newfound friends were rehearsing off-hours in Bernardo's Brooklyn studio and recording what would become their first record.
As Terence's songs took shape, it became evident that his writing largely concerned a particular period for him in New York. The result is Maps and Legends, a collection of songs inspired by Bernardo´s adopted hometown. Written over the course of 3 years, Maps and Legends is a uniquely personal tribute to an ever-changing city and the friends who define it. The group continued to record in spurts throughout the city and in Kid Koala's studio in Montreal, Canada. In 2006, the band began performing regularly in New York venues such as the Mercury Lounge, Southpaw and Cakeshop.
With roots firmly planted in strong songwriting and inventive production, Taxi Taxi's sound defies easy classification. The band serves up tunes that are by turns rocky and melancholic, experimental and nostalgic. Terence Bernardo is also the co-founder of White Mud Free Way whose 2004 album "Last Year's Junk" was released by Bar/None Records. The record made several 'best-of' lists in 2004 and was hailed by Rolling Stone as "cause for celebration...one of the most charming, lo-fi records this year." When not working on his own music Terence works as a producer, mixer and sound designer.
