The Maccabees are fast establishing themselves as the one of the best British talents around, informing their songs with both the thump and tall tales of modernist life as well as classic British songwriting greats like Ray Davies and Ian Dury.
Hailing from south London, The Maccabees (singer Orlando, brothers Felix & Hugo, drummer Rob and bass player Rupert) are a young band making big strides towards becoming part of this grand tradition. A decidedly English guitar pop band, whose worldview has been formed by influences as disparate as the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, television cricket coverage and growing up in south London, this is a group with a unique slant on things, and who are eager to share it.

Having released two sell-out limited edition 7”s and with a clutch of near-legendary gigs under their belt their assault on your consciousness continues apace with the release of First Love. Produced by Stephen Street, First Love sits somewhere between the indie spike of The Futureheads and pop nouse of Blur. An incredible ode to being away from home for the first time and falling in love for the first time, this is romanticism only a bright eyed young man could write. Singer Orlando Weeks’ attention to detail in his lyrics as well as his powerfully mellifluous vocals clearly set this band out from the rest.
As a live force there are few bands to touch them at the moment. One song in to their show and their obsessive fans are sent into twitches, each claiming a section of the myriad songs for their own. As a frontman Orlando has the swagger and style to capture the crowd’s imaginations and the rare harmony of band and pit makes for a thrilling spectacle – catch them on the NME rock & Roll Riot Tour and the MTV Spanking New Music (dates below). They have also just confirmed a headline gig at London’s ULU on December 5th.
