Most indie rock aficionados can probably tell you a thing or two about Northampton. The tiny Massachusetts town gave birth to a number of ultra-influential acts, including Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and Silver Jews. These same folks probably also know about The Mitchells, the long running indie rock act that set out to "Write songs like the Smiths, but perform them like Polvo." These indie rock veterans are a major part of the Northeast scene and have shared bills over the years with Throwing Muses, Buffalo Tom, The Figgs, Versus, Crooked Fingers and Jason Lowenstein. For their third full-length, Slow Gears, The Mitchells keep the up-tempo, distorted feel that fans are used to, while introducing some new atmospheric moments that give listeners a chance to reflect on this truly awesome band.

    The Mitchells

    Biography
The Mitchells are a veteran indie rock band based in Northampton, Massachusetts (launching point of Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Sliver Jews, Scud Mountain Boys, Pernice Brothers). Crafting pop songs out of off-kilter, sparring guitars, drums & vocals, they have garnered comparisons to The Wedding Present, Joy Division, Television, Interpol and Spoon.

Since the band's inception in 1994, they have been found playing in crowded wood sheds, on 18-wheeler flatbeds, and in more traditional venues ranging from NYC to Halifax, NS. They have shared bills with Throwing Muses, Versus, Crooked Fingers and The Faint. Over 12 years, The Mitchells have honed their sound through a series of self produced cassettes, 7" singles and full-length CDs.

Their latest offering, "Slow Gears" is their third CD, and second release on Pigeon Records (Spouse, Mark Schwaber, Dennis Crommett). Lead singer Caleb Wetmore also plays bass for New Radiant Storm King.

"Slow Gears" features The Mitchells at their distorted, up-tempo best, but also finds new open atmospheric moments to break up the density. This record also marks the closing of a chapter for the band. With the departure of guitarist Kayvan Darouian, The Mitchells have now begun to explore a leaner live sound as a trio.
