It’d be too easy to throw a few labels at Voxtrot to see what stuck. Sure, the guitars jangle, their t-shirts are skinny and they probably prefer coffee to ale. But these boys are about as far from the latest OC mix-CD as they are themselves from your average Texan preconception. You see, they’ve more than just some cardigans, bass and guitar. They come fully armed with that killer element: hook after hook… after ruddy hook.
Voxtrot have literally been conceived in two countries, having sprung initially from lead singer Ramesh’s burning desire to breathe life into a collection of songs he’d been carefully mining from his influences. It soon became apparent, however, that Voxtrot were to be far more than a bandwagon to one man’s ambition and uncanny way with a tune. That early 90’s tang of Scottish pop is no accident, as Ramesh moved from his native Austin, Texas to Glasgow, UK just to drink in the vibes. You can hear it not only in his effects pedal but his affection: listen hard and catch the odd fleeting Northern intonation in his lullaby lilt. Closer to home, they were recently one of the leading lights of the now world-famous SXSW festival.
Their Raised By Wolves mini-album has been an iTunes cult hit, and, like all the savvy members of pop’s new generation, Voxtrot are not averse to hijacking the contagious spread of MySpace to their advantage. Blogs and messageboards throughout the globe have taken the fanzine’s place in spreading the good word and Voxtrot are the scene’s current namedrop du jour, making it onto teenagers’ top tens and home-made t-shirts either side of the Atlantic.
But spewing out such ridiculously hook-laden pop numbers takes more than a pinch of Teenage Fanclub here and Morrissey/Marr there. For their songs may be hewn from the very stuff of fine melody, but there’s a muscle to their rhythm, an urge to dance and a skill with song that belies their tender years.
So we’re proud to present this double A-side single, courtesy of Full Time Hobby. Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives careens along like it doesn’t know how the next verse goes, from which decade it’s going to derive its next heady rush of chorus or even what the words are. Rise Up In The Dirt is its cousin in crime and a joyous gallop through a seemingly unending galaxy of chorus. We’ll leave the rest of the superlatives to you.
