If music is influenced from the art rock visionaries of the past, can it still be something new without reeking of derivation? For Waves on Waves, the answer is yes. With pop sensibilities comparable to Morrissey and Tears For Fears, Waves on Waves displays a new vision that surpasses their experiences before creating their self-titled debut. The result is a fresh, yet retro throwback that lands somewhere between The Police’s Synchronicity and Brain Damage-era Pink Floyd.
The band’s self-titled debut, out September 9, 2008 on VTP Music Group, presents singer/guitarist Thornton, bassist Luke Aaron and drummer Enoch Porch following in the footsteps of the art-rock era, adroitly escaping the dulling effects of simple repetition.
“We wanted to make a record that showed who we really are and at the same time not obtuse,” says Thornton. “We tried to be universal with the record, and hopefully it’s something that could grow into mass appeal.”
Lush with emotive vocal harmonies, vintage synth, and an amiable yet firm underbelly of rhythm, Waves in Waves does not show an overt effort for the eclectic, nor a striving for the retro façade. Their sound thrives in the present with an intriguing individualism that demands to be heard.
Under the moniker Thornton, it was the group’s 2004 release Had A Sword that first put them on the underground radar. Receiving praise from a variety of publications and quickly gaining recognition, they were hurled into the forefront as one of Nashville’s premier rock outfits after winning the Nashville Scene Award for the Best Experimental Rock Group in 2004.
In support for Had a Sword, the group made their way through an extensive tour in 2004 and 2005. Although largely successful, their ride was cut short after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and, consequently, the plans for the rest of their tour. As they fled north from the disaster, they cancelled the rest of their tour dates, and the band went into hiatus; Enoch toured as the bassist for brit-rock group, Lovedrug, Luke got married, and Thornton went on a sabbatical in South America. This hiatus, however, became the catalyst for their forthcoming record.
With fresh ideas, years of previous experience to draw from, and renewed vigor, Enoch, Luke, and Thornton are ready to present Waves on Waves to the world this September.
